Help me pick a major, need to transfer in a few days!

First and foremost, thanks for viewing my thread. I’m a California community college student getting ready to transfer to a California State University. My G.P.A. at the moment is right around 3.7/8 I need to make a decision regarding whether I want to major in “Business Administration - Accounting” or “Business Administration - Finance”. I’m interested in finance, it’s something that I genuinely enjoy. The only reason why I haven’t sent my application in yet is because I heard that a finance degree from a non-target/non-top 50 business school is useless and won’t land me a job. Accounting is a major that pretty much guarantees you a job no matter where you went, but I don’t find the work to be intellectually stimulating at all… I really want to major in finance, work a couple of years and take the CFA/get my MBA. If I go to a CSU, keep my GPA above a 3.7, and get some work experience, would a finance major be justified? Once again, thanks for viewing my thread and thanks for your help.

Psssh. You probably won’t land a job at a Wall Street investment banking firm if you didn’t go to a top 50 school, but there are plenty of other jobs. The business world has an ever-growing need for employees with skills in quantitative analysis. The era of big data has brought with it a big focus on analytics. If you graduate in finance, you will be employable.

Hmmm, you think I’d be able to land a job above minimum wage (40-50k)? As for Wall Street, I’m only planning to apply there after my M.B.A. ;p

Which California state school… there’s a big spread in terms of recruitment and educational rankings.

Sacramento

Many moons ago I earned both a BS Biz and MBA from Sac State and have been as successful as I have wanted to be.

No major guarantees you a job. (i have a an unemployed friend with a Wharton MBA)

From your comments above, you probably shouldn’t invest the extra year a CPA requires to get into a field you are pretty sure you’ll hate. Finance is a fine and very marketable degree. Many banks, insurance companies and financial services firms recruit on campus (no guarantees though), Get a job and see where that takes you. Maybe you’ll want an MBA, maybe you won’t.

You may want to take the GMAT now, while you are still in school/study mode. That way, you will have a score at the ready should you decide to go back.

Go Hornets!
