Hi! I am applying to colleges rn and am trying to get some insight on where to apply/what would be a good fit:
-4.12 uw gpa out of 4.33 (my school is weird)
1360 sat (not going to submit to my reach schools obvi)
Will graduate with 6 APS (would’ve been 7 but it didnt fit into my schedule)
lowest grade on transcript is an a-
EC’s: dancer for 14 years, girl scouts, leadership at my temple, president of 2 clubs, interned for a political campaign, mentor to freshman, other stuff
I go to a small school in Westchester, New York
I want to go into advertising. So I am looking at schools with a mass communications or advertising major.
Preferably medium sized. For the best success I am looking to be either located in a city or a large college with large resources. Here is my list so far:
Syracuse University (Newhouse)
Boston university
Northeastern University
emory
UNC Chapel Hill
Temple
University of Delaware
SUNY Binghamton
UConn
UMass Amherst
GWU
American University
Lehigh
What’s your budget? Did you run the NPC for these schools and are they affordable without debt?
Agree about UNC. Would be a very high reach. Same with Emory.
Syracuse would be a nice option with Newhouse.
Boston is a great college city. Maybe look at Emerson.
Temple is very urban. The surrounding area is rough. That said, I liked the campus. It’s small and compact. Philly grew on us the few times we’ve been there.
Have you considered Fordham? I’ve seen some grads of their journalism program do very well. Seems like it fits your parameters and stats; good dance opportunities too.
Seconding Penn State (Bellisario) and Fordham.
UNC is a high reach but if you want NC, UNC Charlotte is in a major urban area and a safety for you.
Run the NPC on every college and cross out the ones out of your parents’ budget out of pocket (savings and income).
Ithaca has an excellent communication program.
I think you have a good list with a mix in terms of safety vs reach vs realistic. Was going to suggest a few Catholic schools and then saw what you wrote above. Syracuse is Catholic though, isn’t it?
-NHS
-Student Sage Award for academics and leadership (Russell Sage College)
-4’s and 5’s on APs with one 3
looking for schools definitely on the eastern half of the US. Preferably the Northeast but possibly farther south or west
no catholic, no huge insane party/sport schools schools, but I still want a smaller, less intense version of that culture. probably in the 7-20,000 student range
I would assume you have checked out all the SUNY and CUNY schools (other than Bing which is on your list above)? They are very good schools and a great value (especially for someone in NY).
I have checked out many SUNYs but unfortunately almost every single SUNY doesn’t have anything related to what I want to major in. Ive been looking into Stony Brook but idk yet.
As for budget, I think my parents would prefer me going to a public school (in or out of state) or if its a private school, I would need to get a lot of merit aid/scholarships to bring down the price. i will do npc, but as of right now im not taking out colleges just because of price.
I wouldn’t necessarily ding Fordham because of its Jesuit/Catholic ties. I am not a Fordham graduate but I worked around the corner from the Lincoln Center campus for years, and have a lot of friends who are graduates, and I never even realized it has those ties. It’s a great school in a great location for your stated interests, so I hope you will take a closer look. They expressly welcome all religious traditions and they do seem to have an active Hillel chapter. Based on our experience searching for college fits for our son, I recommend you try to be very open-minded at the start of the process. On the other hand, I think you might be making a mistake not thinking about costs at this stage. Some of the NPCs will give you merit aid numbers as well as need-based aid numbers, and that might give you a better idea as to whether some other private schools might work.
What are you wanting to study? Journalism? Or what?
Your GPA is solid - probably a 3.8 or so if you were on a 4.0 scale. You can figure it out - take your As and make them a 4.0, Bs a 3.0 The + and minus don’t matter. The SAT is low - but you can apply TO to places.
If Newhouse is for you and you want mid-size (and you’ll get into SU but as others have said likely not to Emory, UNC and I’ll add BU and Northeastern) - if not mentioned you can add Miami (slight reach), Ithaca, Hofstra, Mizzou (a bit bigger), Kansas (small town - 1K Jewish students believe it or not), and Emerson listed. UVM too. SMU - you don’t want “religious” but has a large Jewish population. Pitt has a program in general studies. College of Charleston depending on the type of communication you want to study at Newhouse.
Miami Ohio and Elon would be good except you mention wanting to be in a city - they are not.
If you could skew larger, U of AZ and FSU - and both have great merit and/or are affordable - you didn’t mention money.
Hope that gives you some ideas…in addition to the ideas others listed above.
OK - I skewed from the NE but you need to if you want to widen the scope - and you don’t need to.
Hi! I want to study advertising but since there are very few colleges with actual advertising majors I am also looking into mass communication majors.Thank you for those suggestions! I definitely agree that Emory and UNC are far reaches but why not try. As for Northeastern, many kids from my school get in there every year which increases the acceptance rate for me so I feel slightly more confident in that one. Im not against being out of cities, for i like college towns, just maybe not super rural and farm-y.
Have you looked at Emerson? Top-notch school if you’re sure about wanting communications. On the smaller end of medium-sized, but urban, with great resources.
In Florida, UMiami could be a fit.
SUNY Albany has a communications program and a good Honors College.
Might expand your reach a bit if you considered a marketing major. Just a thought. Another thought would be to consider schools that are Jesuit. The Jesuits are a branch of Catholicism renowned for education and those schools often do not have a religious requirement and I have generally heard that non-Catholics are very comfortable at those schools. You do have quite a few schools but just some ideas to help expand your list if that is what you want.
BU and Northeastern are brutal…I’d say your only odds are ED but given you want/need aid, you need to run the net price calculator and ensure you can afford because otherwise you’re roped in at $80K and I don’t think you get in anyway - but I hope you do if that’s what you want.
While advertising is great and Newhouse was #1 - well 30 years ago - I don’t know today - I’ve worked with many an ad agency and because so many people want in, it’s an extremely low paying field - especially the entry agency jobs - so yes, you want to save.
So there’s a list for everything - right. And if you make the right connections, you can get to any job from anywhere - but if you want to see who is typically strong in advertising, I think some of these are considered strong:
Alabama - some rate it #1 for advertising and/or PR. Lots of northeasterners and a vibrant Jewish life (not even kidding)…large school (really nice), small town that’s ehhhh. Yes, my son attends.
UF - huge, small town, many Jews, a reach for you.
U of Miami I mentioned - a slight reach - BU and Northeastern are harder admits, SU an easier admit.
Oregon - another with a good Jewish life.
Michigan State - huge.
Penn State - people mentioned before - huge (but really nice)
RIT for digital - no clue how many Jewish students as Hillel doesn’t list. Has to be some.
SMU as I said - decent jewish pop and merit…more than SU.
Temple - skews large
Others mentioned Emerson. I mentioned Bradley. Looks like Hofstra doesn’t have advertising but Ithaca (cool town) has Integrated Marketing. Susquehanna is smaller, has Jews, a bit North of Harrisburg. Rowan - if you are in NJ it’s public. Oh, and Quinnipiac. UVM has digital marketing. FSU has merit - you may or may not get an out of state waiver. Your SAT may be a bit short but even full pay is $40K total so you may find it affordable vs. SU and lots of Northeasterners… It’s large though.
If you want to save $$, you may have to travel - but Bama, Arizona…I didn’t mention U of SC but has a decent Jewish life. It’s a match or slight reach. Other schools, like College of Charleston which would work for you - but it’s more marketing and less advertising.
What sate are you from?
If you decide what you want to spend - and yes, you may need to travel - we can help even more.
But hopefully I’ve given you some schools to look up in my two posts - and all would be ok to excellent for being Jewish.
