Help me pick my boarding school!

I need help with choosing which boarding schools to apply to for high school. (I'm in 7th grade now)

I'm interested in St. Paul's, Choate Rosemary, Deerfield, Andover, and Exeter. Which do you think are the best based on my critiera..

Must offer French
Greek (not an absolute must)
Many extracurriculars
Impressive college matriculation
And whatever else you think is good...

Suggestions would be appreciated. Thank you. :)

actually, ALL of them offer french, greek, plenty of extracurriculars, and have great college matriculation. but remember, just because they have lots of ppl going to HYP doesnt mean u will. it will be tough competition.

but im not discouraging you. these are really nice schools. are you a seventh grader?

go to the schools' websites and order info packets. they'll be tons of help.

Yes, I'm in seventh grade.

I've ordered many information packets this weekend. Hopefully they'll arrive this week.

Also, I was wondering if going to this school - http://www.collegiateschool.org/Default.asp?bhcp=1 would be better than boarding school. My dad is moving to NYC and was wondering if I'd like to go there instead of boarding school. I'm still undecided.

Wow, you are mature for a seventh grader.

First and foremost, you should visit these schools. They all offer quality educations. The deciding factor will be the atmospheres at each school.

A while ago, there was a sticky thread about prestigious prep schools. The topic was whether attending these academic powerhouses would be an advantage or hinderance for students. You might be familiar with the thread. Well, the general consensus was that, if you were not at the top 10 to 20 percent of your class, attending a prep school, like the ones you listed, would be a hinderance to college admissions. In short, as IluvA's stated, these schools will not guarantee ivy league acceptances. For some students, attending a decent private school where they can earn straight A's would open more doors for them than if they were to attend a prep school where they would be a middle-of-the-pack type of student. So, choose wisely. Good Luck.

oh, collegiate is a fabulous school - you should look into that as well. you should look at every school carefully before deciding. you have to apply to the schools, obviously, but you can always drop the school in the middle of applying if you dont like the school.

The only thing that I didn't like about collegiate is that it's in NYC. I'm not even sure if I want to live with my dad, let alone live in NYC.

See, the plan was for me to attend Ashbury College (a pretty good private school in Ottawa, Canada, where my dad was living.) http://www.ashbury.on.ca I was going to go there but then my dad got a job offer in Toronto, where he is moving to in April, then, he's moving with the same company to New York six months after that. Right now, I live with my mom in Michigan and I am attending a medium sized public middle school, that I don't like. There aren't any decent private schools that I am able to get to around here. So, it seems like it's either boarding school, a gross public school (lol), or an extremely expensive private school. (It seems like collegiate's tuition is nearly the same as some boarding school's.)

wow, you are in 7th grade and no one has yet criticized you for being here. well, iluva's and i are all prep school applicants. i made a list of those applying in the official countdown thread, so you can go look- there are many of us!
i really wish i started preparing in 7th grade... ;)

well, i applied to
exeter
andover
choate
deerfield
hotchkiss
peddie

i know that st.paul's is a good one, too, but i'm catholic so yeah...

i haven't decided if i like exeter or andover better, but i gotta get in first before that! all those schools you mentioned offer all of that. at choate, the person who interviewed me said that they opened a greek class just for him and some others. just keep your options wide and apply to as many schools you can (well, app. fee is about fifty dollars each)..that's what i'm doing. hopefully i'll get into at least one or two!

GOOD LUCK!! :)

Thanks for your help. :)

Bump. ----->

Jonathan -- You seem very mature for a 7th grader. There are wonderful day schools in NYC. We do not live in the city, but I've heard that it is very difficult to get into these schools. Some boarding schools will allow you to tour in May of this year without having an interview. If you can do this, I think it will help you narrow what you want. You might want to look at Hackley School in Tarrytown, NY. They have a 5 day boarding program, so you could return to the NYC over the weekend. However, I hear that it is a very small boarding program, so it might not be that fun. When my son visited boarding schools, I encouraged him to apply to those schools that he felt could be his second home. I asked him to not focus on the prestige. I think that if you find a school or schools that have a very inviting atmosphere and culture (to you), you will do well there. Take a look at www.boardingschoolreview.com. We used it to narrow our search. Good luck!

I strongly recommend applying to Andover, or at least taking a look at our campus. If you have any questions feel free to PM me.

Take a look at Western Reserve Academy, outside of Cleveland. It is a great school, and a little closer to home for you.

gods favoritex, do you enjoy your classes at andover?

For those of you who already attend boarding school - how are the bathrooms? lol. Are there ones inside your dorm or what? lol

I may be visiting Greenhills School in Ann Arbor this weekend. I doubt I'll end up going there though. I'd like something even more challenging. :D

wantascholarship: While it varies from class to class (obviously some I enjoy more than others) I would say that yes I do enjoy my classes very much. Even chemistry is kind of fun. However there is no comparison to my old school, classes here are so much more enjoyable. You will be challenged every period of every day whether you're doing African Drumming or Multi-Variable Calculus.

bump -------->

Personally(and this is just me) I would focus on your strengths.

Are you a math/science person? Then look into taking AP Bio/Chem/Phys before the end of sophomore year. Look into olympiads. Exeter is famous for mathematics, and Andover for physics.

Are you humanities? Look into MUN and stuff(sorry, I'm not well versed w/ humanties opportunities).

Remember, if you are aiming for ivies, you can get into them from any school. Your HS success will be a result of your individual effort and skills, and a school can only provide so much opportunity before the burden comes on you.
