The schools that I think that would match you well for your majors, HS stats and what you are looking for in a school (besides the major city aspect) are:

Texas A&M University - College Station
University Of Iowa
University Of Kansas
University Of Minnesota - Twin Cities (located in Minneapolis, MN, a big city)

The University of Missouri may be a good fit. It is known for the best journalism program in the country. Indiana University- Bloomington also has a very good journalism. You may want to check out USC which is big on sports. UNC- Chapel Hill also has a good journalism program. U of Maryland- College Park and Penn State would be another good choice. USC prob. is the best fit out of the schools I suggested.

What about UT-Austin, University of Georgia (Athens is about 45 minutes away from Atlanta), American U (in D.C. - great for political science/government), Georgetown (has the advantage of being in a big city, with great sports, AND a great reputation), Northeastern University (in Boston, not really big with sports), Notre Dame (90 miles south of Chicago), University of Illinois-Urbana-Champaign (big on sports, 2 hours away from Chicago), University of Illinois-Chicago (not really big with the sports, but in a large city)

There are LACs in urban areas, by the way. Some of them are around the same size as small universities, too.

Northwestern U is also very good in journalism and has an accelerated masters program which you can get a BA/MA in 4 years. It’s right outside of Chicago, but would prob. be a reach for you.

Also, out of your list NYU is really the only one known for journalism. The other are probably better for economics. U of Miami has a journalism program, but it’s not one which someone would name one of the best journalism programs in the country. NYU may come in and Northwestern, Mizzou, IU- Bloomington, USC, etc would also come up.

Thank you for all the suggestions, everyone; I am actively looking into the colleges mentioned!

As far as journalism, early_college, I know what you mean about the schools I picked not being well-known for journalism. I just had a talk with my dad a few nights ago, and he really doesn’t want to pay for an expensive education for me just to come out of a potentially good university with a journalism degree. My dad majored in business, and he feels that business is the only field which I should consider. He wasn’t very happy with economics either, but suggested finance…

NYU is really expensive and you could double major with journalism and economics. The state schools may actually be worth looking into. I do think USC and NYU would be your best bet though. I think you need to discuss more with your father, because it doesn’t seem like your on the same page.

NYU would be a good fit. The average GPA is about a 3.6, so I wouldn’t consider it a safety. It would have been a reach if you wanted to go to Stern. USC would also be a good fit, I think there average GPA is a 3.7. I think the same for BC and they all are really good fits. I would now try some safeties and reaches. Northwestern would be a good reach for you and Mizzou and IU would be good safeties.

OP, Early College is right. Northwestern is definitely a reach while Missou and IU-B would be safeties. Keep in mind you will have to pay OOS costs for those schools. For Missou that is $30K/year. Will your parents be able to do that?

The problem is, Erin’s Dad, that my brother was accepted to Mizzou. While he intended to do journalism, he wasn’t directly admitted to the program for freshman year, but he seemed okay with that. My parents did not want to pay for even a visit to Mizzou. I don’t know if they thought that he wasn’t serious about the college or something, or that Mizzou was worth the OOS tuition costs, but Mizzou really wasn’t really considered as a viable contender in my brother’s college process.

My parents are hoping for something like NYU or such for me.

As far as safeties, I was thinking CUNY Hunter and CUNY Baruch.

For matches, I was thinking Fordham (visited the Lincoln Center campus, and absolutely loved it), George Washington University (will visit again; I took a brief trip to DC and pass by it), and perhaps Indiana U. Thoughts on these schools?

Ohio U would be good, Matt Lauer (one of my favorite newscasters, watch him almost every morning) went there. Also they got Honors tutorial for you, which is kinda cool and modeled after Oxford and Yale. Also the biggest party school in the nation IMO as an Ohioan.

Suny Purchase may be a better safety for you. They have a decent program. How about Syracuse? They have an awesome journalism school. George Washington in DC you may like also. U Maryland also has a good program.
