Hey, thanks for reading :)
I'm a rising junior and my family is planning to take a college trip next week, I've got all the schools I'm considering down, but I don't really have any safeties. I know it's still kind of early, but I might not have a chance next year to look at so many schools, so any suggestion is appreciated.

GPA: 4.0 unweighted
GPA: 4.7 weighted
SAT: 2300+ (based on my goals and the practice tests I've taken)
SAT II: USH 800, Math II 800
9 APs by the time I graduate

EC: pretty solid
Editor in chief of newspaper, other journalism stuff
Few other club offices

I'm looking for a medium to large school
preferably in the northeast or the surrounding area
Something along the likes of NYU, which I counted on as a safety but realized that it's competitive so it might be a match?
Thanks so much, I really appreciate it!

Pitt (honors); Boston University; Northeastern;GW;American;Case Western Reserve

Your stats are quite strong – it’s the old dilemma, though, there are no guarantees for the most selective colleges. What do you consider “matches”? Would you consider smaller schools – have you visited any?

Ford1998 got it with BU & N’eastern. Frankly, any school that is not ultra competitive would be a safety/near safety for you. Other possibilities: Syracuse, UConn, Villanova, Rutgers. Best of luck.

Erin’s Dad - yes, I took Math II last June after taking Precalc

I’m still very undecided on majors, probably something in the humanities, possibly a English major. Since I’m still confused, I would like a college that has a lot of amenities and good areas of study.

Maybe a match of something like Northwestern (hopefully, probably low reach), Carnegie Mellon, JH or Georgetown? I don’t really know, match suggestions are also appreciated.
Thanks so much!

Those all seem to be low reaches just based on the percent they accept (25% or so). You would be competitive for all of them (around the 75% level)

U.Va. is in the area “surrounding” the northeast - you should be safe there with your stats, even as an OOS applicant. Unfortunately, when you look at mid-to-large schools in the northeast, you get the Ivies and their equivalents, and then a lot of the larger schools would be ones for which your stats would seem extraordinarily high. Penn State would be a lock. IDK, Carnegie Mellon may appear relatively safe as well. If you’d be looking for financial aid, be aware that there are not only safeties in terms of admission but also safeties in terms of being able to afford the cost of attendance.

I’d say you have a great shot of getting into multiple ivies with these scores. Stanford, Northwestern, Chicago, Johns Hopkins would probably be good matches too (though Stanford is a reach for just about anyone). I would be quite surprised if you end up in the 2300 range and don’t get into Rice, Emory, Vanderbilt, Georgetown, UVA and CMU (all excellent places btw).

NYU is a solid match but based on only selecting 30% of applicants I wouldn’t call it a safety. UVA could work but the entry is harder for OOS students - once again a match.
