Hi everybody
I'm normally a 4.0 student but for AP Calculus BC, I got a B for the first semester of senior year. Do you think this will really impair my chances for Harvard?
I have good grades in the rest of my classes, which include 4 APs, Philosophical theology and journalism, as well as extracurriculars in community service, choir and musical instruments (violin and piano). no national awards or state ones either, except for a few natl and state ones for journalism ones from national conventions. Also will give a session on the media's perception of Asians in Seattle's next NSPA convention. So please help me anyone and tell me what you think my chances are! Thanks!

1 b will not kill your app

Look at the other thread about B's and applying to Harvard, but I got 8 B's so fair and I got in (including one during first semester of senior year...regular english lol)

warcraft does indeed own...
(have you got WoW btw?)

Especially since it is BC Calc, a hard class, a B will not be detrimental.

Thanks all you guys for your great support. I checked out the other thread with B's and it's pretty much set--1 B will (hopefully) not break me. Oh well, if anyone else has any opinion on my chances with my list of activities and grades please tell me! Oh yeah, for test scores, highest Verbal is 800, highest Math is 740 (math was never my strong suit, hence the B), SAT II Bio 720, Math IC 700 and Writing 760. Please tell me what you think are my chances, thank you!

How was your essay? And you're doing philosophical theology...have you written any papers so far? What about ECs?

don't mean to be mean, but if you actually thought one B was going to keep you from getting in, maybe you want to renew your perspective on life and relax a bit.

and about chances, nobody knows, really: acceptees even say on these threads that they don't know why they got in. you shouldn't have higher or lower confidence in your chances just based on what some random people on the internet say.

anyway, just my two cents.

haha, Thanks so much for your kind response--you're right. I'm getting an education, not a transcript.

Well, my essay was about one of my EC, the japanese abacus, in which I'm in the highest level before going on to like genius calculator whizzes, that teaches me to do mental math quickly and accurately. I tied that in with my interest in studying cognitive science and neuroscience, especially being interested in the mind, brain and behavior program at harvard. My EC include, violin, piano, japanese abacus, community service which I'm the co-president in making baby gowns for preemies at the neo natal ICU at California Pacific med. center, choir and journalism (although it counts as a class, I kinda count it as an EC) in which I am the features editor. I will be also presenting a session on the media's perception of asians in the upcoming spring Seattle national scholastic press association convention. Please comment on my chances thanks!

oh yeah, about any essays, i haven't written a large one for philosophical theology yet, but will as my final. I did submit my cognitive psychology paper on the japanese abacus and the brain when I took that class at Stanford and got a 98 on that to Harvard as a supplement.
