Hello all, I am currently a freshman at the University of Florida and I am considering a transfer to several schools. I am currently an Industrial & Systems Engineer with a minor in Physics. I am thinking of transfering to a smaller school with a higher intellectual atmosphere. I am not, however, limiting myself to schools with Engineering programs and am fully capable and willing to major in Physics or Math (or both?).

My Stats:

URM (hispanic), and first generation college student

GPA - 4.0 (UF) and 3.8 (HS unweight.)

SAT - 1300 (retaking in Jan. expect 1450+, probably 1500+)

SAT II - Math2c 740, Writing 690, Chem 640

12 AP exams taken (passed all with 4 or higher "AP National Scholar")

Competed nationally in MAO (20th in Advanced Calculus)

Competed statewide in JETS (4th in State TEAM+S competition)

Member of several clubs in HS (NHS, EHS, etc.)

Varsity Basketball 9,10,11 (Knee injury kept me out grade 12)

175 hours of community service as Physical Therapist

Helped initiate a monthly visit to Boystown (A Christian organization that takes care of orphan immigrants) Head of Sports/Recreation division.

Countless hours of tutoring in Mathematics and Natural Sciences.

Member of SHPE (Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers) and several other Engineering societies at UF.

Research in Particle Physics lab next semester.

Managerial Internship at ANI (Alabama Neurological Institute) this coming summer.

Decent recs (good rec from research mentor, decent from other professors)

Good essays.

Those are my stats for the most part, what do you think my chances are at the following schools?
1) Harvard
2) MIT
3) Stanford
4) Yale
5) Penn
6) Cornell
7) Amherst
8) UVA
9) Claremont McKenna
10) Harvey Mudd
11) Northwestern
12) Wash U. in StL.

Thank you for reading such a long post (sorry 'bout that) and I would greatly appreciate any evaluation of my stats/chances, as well as any suggestions on what schools to add/drop from the list and what I can do to improve my chances. Once again, thank you very much.

Thank you... Anyone else? Any schools I should add or drop? As well as any possible improvements I can make on my resume? Thank you once again, and I appreciate your input.

i agree with spetulla, but i think that getting into MIT and Stanford shouldn't be as hard getting into Harvard or Yale (they are reaches though)

I would say you have very little chance at MIT, considering they accepted 5 people last year. Stanford you have some chance, albeit not much, and Yale and Harvard are definitely reaches.

Thanks, do you really think 5-12 are matches/safeties? If so, can you please evaluate whether they are match/safety/match-reach/etc. I'm just trying to get a feel for my chances at these schools as I continue to do research. Can anyone provide any information about the culture/intellect/political awareness of these institutions? Once again, Thank you for your input.

With the exception of Harvard and Amherst, the schools I am applying to are within Engineering. The most common is Systems or Managerial Engineering. What do you think my chances are at the Engineering schools for the schools listed? Thank you for the quick response by the way... and you are for more confident than I.

Hrmm.. specialties schools, such as business, engineering and etc, are more difficult to transfer into. I misread your post; I thought you were applying to the general A&S. In that case, I do not know your chances.

If you have taken difficult classes (especially math), I do not think they will care about your SAT's.

I would imagine that you've finished diff eq already.

Do you think I should apply to the college of arts & sciences? Would it really change my chances that drastically? Does anyone with experience within these schools know how easy it is to switch between colleges? (I know at Columbia you have to apply as a transfer student to get into Fu Foundation) Thanks for the advice everyone.

<edit> Yes I have taken DFQ's already.</edit>

I have cut several schools out of the old list, tell me what my chances are at:

(1) Harvard - Harvard College (Physics Department)
(2) Penn - Penn Engineering (Systems Engineering)
(3) Stanford - Stanford Engineering (Management Science & Engineering)
(4) Cornell - Cornell Engineering (Info Science and Systems Engineering)
(5) Amherst - Amherst College (Physics Department)
(6) UVA - School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (Info/Systems Engineer)
(7) Claremont McKenna - Joint Science Department (Management Engineering)
(8) Northwestern - McKormick SEAS (Industrial Engineering)
(9) Wash University in St. Louis - SEAS (Systems Science Engineering)

Thank you for your responses, they are greatly appreciated.
