Ok so here is my story. I applied to Chapman undecided and stated clearly in my essay that my main two interests were Film and Bussiness. I got in with a scholorship and was like 90% sure I was going to go because over that time I gained such a great interest in film. However, I called Dodge (the film school) and they told me that there was a 99.9% chance that they would not take me into their film school from an undecided major. They said that they like people to apply directly or go to a community college because they have to APPLY there. After that she told me that I should talk to the Dean of Dodge but I really dont know what to do.The dean will be back on monday and I dont know what to tell him. Honestly, I TOLD THEM SPECIFICALY THAT FILM WAS AN INTEREST OF MINE and they accepted me. The thing is that I can't go to community college because I worked so hard to get into this school and because I WILL LOSE MY SCHOLORSHIP and I cant afford that!!! WHY THE HELL WOULDNT THEY TAKE ME INTO FILM!!! I have to talk to the dean on monday and tell him my situatation but I am so mad right now because I dont know what I am supposed to do. My other choice of school is Boston University, howver, they dont have a film school!!! Does anyone know if it is hard to transfer from undecided to Dodge or what I should do at ALL!!!

Did you actually apply to Dodge with the supplemental film application…the video, the essay, the creative list of accomplishments, etc? Anyone accepted into Dodge had to send in all of that extra stuff as part of their application…just saying you are interested in film in an essay and applying undeclared will not get you into Dodge. Everyone who was accepted and lots who were were turned down had to apply to Dodge along with the general university application…maybe something will come out of your phone call to the Dean but unfortunately, I don’t think so…

Yeah, film production had a lot of supplemental stuff that you had to complete, it is not necessarily fair to say you should start at the film school freshman year along with all these other people that have worked much harder to get in. The acceptance rate for film production applicants was about 8-10% this year…

I understand your frustration though. I would say if you really want this, talk to the dean but don’t act like you’re entitled to be in Dodge. Make sure he knows that you are willing to work hard your freshman year and apply to switch your major after that, and that you only didn’t go through all the steps because you didn’t understand the Dodge application process completely. Let him see that you’re not trying to circumvent their system and he might have more sympathy.

Then, freshman year, take Intro to Visual Storytelling and Intro to Film Aesthetics first semester, as many film production majors will. You can do this even as an undecided or business major because of the Inter/Multidisciplinary Cluster Chapman requires as part of their GE program. Take some business classes too, just to hedge your bets. I would talk to the film school near the end of that semester if you’re still interested, and take the steps they give you to switch.
