Hi, I am an international transfer and just got admitted by Emory and Pitzer. I am considering Econ major. So here comes the problem
Emory does not have such a strong program in Econ; as far as I know, most students majoring in Economics did not have a positive attitude towards it. The b-school, good and prestigious, yet I also find it extremely hard to get a job after graduation, with only the level of undergraduate experience and the background of international students.( the visa problem). So if I go to Emory, the choices would be left with going to graduate school.
Pitzer, small size liberal arts college. Its econ is also small and not strong. But Pitzer shares the resources with colleges as Pomona, CMC etc. Students can go to take classes there. But the concern would be the drug culture. Also, I think the students at Pitzer do not really care about academics.

Correct me if I am wrong. Would be very much appreciative if there are suggestions.

Hi Scambledegg,

I think that, first off, you’re looking at two EXTREMELY different schools, almost incomparable in a lot of ways.

Emory is a mid-sized research university–Pitzer is a small liberal arts college.Very different.

I think what might help you most would be looking at the mission statements of the colleges and the student outcomes. Pitzer is very much a mission and values-driven school; Pitzer students want to change the world. Emory is a world-class research institution. Arguably, I would say that in terms of research, Emory has a stronger economics department/connections to the business community based on the b-school. You seem very career focused, yet you haven’t specified what you’re interested in doing.

I would just emphasize that you not choose a school based on reputation or prestige alone and think about what fits you as a student. What kind of community do you want to be a part of? I would challenge your assumption that students at Pitzer do not care about academics. While I would argue that Pitzer students are non-competitive when it comes to academics, the courseload and research undertaken by students their is no easy feat.

Basically, we need more info about you. What are your goals? Or, at least, what is your general direction? What do you want to be involved in during college? I hope that these questions start to drive your decision-making process.

I hold a BA in Economics from Pitzer and took classes at both CMC and Drucker MBA program. I have a very good knowledge background in my concentration, but also always planned on a MBA (which I later obtained). During my tenure as a student, PItzer did not have a drug culture. Like any school, some students dabbled or explored in those areas, but it is not a school characterized by mind altering activities. Rather the school is a mix-bag with the majority of students taking the academic endeavors quite seriously.

Best of luck on your decision.
