Help me understand the 5C thing

So the 5C college were all off my radar, until today, and now they are starting to look a lot more interesting. The reason is I am a lot more interested in attending a mid sized school rather than a small one for social reasons. How much are the 5Cs like a mid sized university? Is there a joint social scene, or separate? Also, how is the social life, especially for gays? and do you take classes with people from other college or separately?

premed4, if you haven’t done so already, you might want to take a look at a couple of earlier threads addressing the consortium:

and

Hope this helps.

My son attends Pomona and I can tell you the campus has all the benefits a mid-sized campus and all the personal attention of a small school. He regularly takes classes at Harvey Mudd or Claremont. some of the schools have limits on how many classes you can take outside of your own college (I think at Pomona it can only be 40%). The social life is VERY integrated. Each campus has a regular social activity on a different night of the week and then there are other bigger events layer on top.My son has friends on all campuses and regularly goes skiing with or hangs out with Pitzer, Claremont and Scripps kids (maybe not so much the HM kids but that is just him). the dining halls are open to all and the kids shop around for whatever food they are interested in for the night (sushi, steak night, taco night etc.). I know quite a few gay kids at Pitzer because I have a relative who attends there and is gay. My son has no problem socializing with them also and I just don’t think it is that big of a deal. However, I sort of expect that at most college these days.
