Ok, my Dad makes about 120k/year so i think i wont be getting any financial aid, and also, i am paying for my college education myself. So i checked myawards for UC davis and got this:

Estimated Cost of Attendance
Fees $14,059.00
Transportation $1,368.00
Out of State $0.00
Total Cost of Attendance $26,570.00

Contributions
Student Contribution $2,574.00
Parent Contribution $30,279.00
Additional Resources $0.00
Total Contributions $33,779.00

Financial Need b**

Estimated Financial Aid
Federal Direct PLUS Loan-NH $16,500.00
Federal Direct Loan Unsub-NH $5,500.00
Total Estimated Financial Aid $22,000.00

Remaining Cost $0.00

Can someone put this in clearer terms for me? Am i getting any money at all or just loans to pay back.

It appears to me that you are getting no aid-just loans to pay back. They are assuming that your parents are able and willing to pay $30,279, which exceeds the cost of attendance. Therefore no aid.

Unfortunately, only loans. I hope you planned to live at home with your parents paying all your living expenses, transportation and books and you trying to find a parttime job. That might bring your loans down to $10,000 a year. Think really hard about the TOTAL you will have to borrow to attend this university. What will your payback timeline with your estimated professional salary when you graduate?

“…I hope you planned to live at home with your parents paying all your living expenses, transportation and books and you trying to find a parttime job…”
OP cannot live at home and commute from Orange County to UC Davis, that would be 16 hrs commuting round-trip LOL
He won’t have time to work part-time!

That’s what i was afraid of :(

What an unfortunate situation i am in haha

Basic Living $9,554.00

This is not room/board (which is around 12.6k), so you are not living in residence hall. That said, you will need additional budget for meal.

I need to brush up on my California geography. Transportation option would be flue powder then. OP I am sorry for your predicament. I hope you have other choices.

With your family income, doubt you will be getting money, but if you had intended to board there, you had better give them a call as it appears you are not down as doing so.

Federal Direct PLUS Loan-NH $16,500.00

That is a PARENT loan…that is not for you. YOU can’t take out that loan. If your parents won’t do that loan (and pay for it), then you won’t have that funding.

You live in OC…did you apply/get accepted to UCI? If not, where else did you get accepted. If your parents won’t take out the Plus loans (which it sounds like they won’t), then Davis is NOT affordable.

you mentioned your dad’s income–but what about mom?? can she contribute anything?

and yeah, for whatever reason, u aren’t being given a room and board estimate–did u leave that out?

OP probably answered the FAFSA question regarding living arrangements as living off campus … or else that is all this school puts in its budget for basic living for all student. In any case, it doesn’t matter, as it won’t result in any more student aid.

WHY do kids who come from families that make good money and who won’t contribute anything apply to “sleep away” schools that aren’t going to give them merit aid to make them affordable?

He lives in OC. I hope he applied to UCI and a Cal State that he can commute to.
