Help me! Wash U vs Georgetown

Thanks for the inputs!
Despite all the good comments about gtown, I think I am leaning to wustl.
But I wonder why even though gtown gets all the good comments, it seems like not many of people actually apply there.

In CC, it is really hard to find threads about gtown. Why is that?
threads about wustl is everywhere.

They probably don’t apply there because Georgetown demands more from an applicant than just about any top school. There is the evaluative interview, the three Sat IIs, no common application and the essays. Georgetown wants to make sure than anyone it admits has really done due dilligence in applying at the level it does due diligence in evaluating. Georgetown wants to do everything to produce leaders and not just statistics. It follows that approach once students are admitted as well with strong advising. If Georgetown admitted you, after its rigorous process, then you must really have something valuable to offer. I would really think twice about turning away from it.

Also, at Georgetown, they are going to make you take 5 classes per term which doesn’t leave a lot of time to keep up with the soap operas. But, if you complete four years at GU, you will know that you have been stretched to make the most of yourself and maximize your potential to make a difference in the world.

WashU is a pretty cool place. I personally greatly prefer it to Georgetown (looked into it, no interest), that is certainly a very personal thing. The environment is very different.

St. Louis may not compare to D.C. very favorably, but there is no lack of things to do on campus/nearby (the Loop) or in the city (the Cardinals vs. the Natinals, er…Nationals?).

People may raise eyebrows if they hear that you are attending WashU over Georgetown, but in the end, it is you that is going to college, and not them.

God, I thought I’ve made my mind, but I am confused again!
I really believed that apart from SFS and Gtown’s awesome political science and IR programs, Wash U is generally better.

But apparently, not everyone thinks so.
I really need to send the deposit today…

Hey, Vienna man. Have you checked the message?
I sent you the private message. Want to ask you something. Please reply back.

WashU is putting a lot of money now into it’s Olin School of Business, and i guess their business/economics program in general. I know that they are hosting the 2009 Forbes CEO forum or something like that which is pretty incredible. Transferring from CAS to Olin is pretty easy too, can take place in one day. Olin students get friday’s off so that hey can have an internship, which is a pretty vital piece of one’s resume when it comes to looking for jobs.

Quick thing: About half of admitted GU’s attend, whereas the number is about 1/3 for UWash. However this may be due to difficulty of application (mentioned earlier)

Keb: choose based on campus, feel, and money, not based on academics.

They are too similar and it will drive you crazy (like me right now)

Indeed, it drives me crazy.
I change my mind every five minutes, and yesterday, I thought I finally made a choice.
I thought wash u may be a good fit.
But now, looking all these good comments on gtown, I am seriously wondering if I’m making the right choice.

liverbird09,

The yield could be due to a number of things. Many applicants simply can’t get over the “prestige factor” and will attend a name school over WashU. The application for WashU also requires considerably less effort than Georgetown’s. WashU’s yield is similar to its peer schools (Hopkins, etc.).

The strength of the students at WashU definitely doesn’t suffer:

WashU: 1380 - 1540
Georgetown: 1310 - 1490

WashU had 241 National Merit scholars in the class of '11; Georgetown was not in the top ten (fewer than 150).

I know that both schools are excellent academically, I just wanted to provide this information for keb.

Good for you. WUStL is the stronger school with the better quality of life. It’s a great choice.

Well… for someone who wants to major in economics, mathematics is a huge part of it. I don’t know if I can go to a school which does not have an engineering school(I mean, can school’s math deparment can be good without an engineering school?)

Furthermore, I don’t know why, but i feel like gtown does not really care about their prospective students.
They have not sent me any package, I have to print out enrollment form by myself which was sent by e-mail, and admission office never returns my e-mail… while wash u was willing to buy me a flight ticket so that i can visit their campus (I could not make it though)

Anyway, it is really strange that even though wash u’s ranking is much higher, gtown seems more prestigious and respected.

To the average person, Georgetown is more prestigious. To the people who will be hiring you in four years, Wash U will be regarded as highly as Georgetown if not better.
