Help me with appropriate universities

Hi everybody!

I am an international student from Vietnam. Can you please help me to choose the suitable university for me (both competitive and safe schools).
My GPA is 3.4 and my ACT score is 27.
I have some Physics awards on national scale.
I’m planning to study in Mechanical Engineering.

Thanks ^^

Clarkson, SUNY-Buffalo, NJIT, Iowa State, Rose Hulman . . . These schools represent matches and reaches that would be excellent for mechanical engineering. However, you didn’t mention anything regarding finances, but you would need to review these schools by this criterion as well.

International students receive minimal funding from US schools. What can you afford?

My family can contribute 20k/year.

You are going to be extremely limited in finding schools within that budget range.

Most schools don’t provide financial aid to international applicants. Check the net price calculators on the web sites of the schools you are considering to view your costs. Do you know where you would like to attend?

I doubt that there are any schools with MechE that would be affordable. About $7k per year of your parents’ budget will be dedicated to health insurance, int’l travel costs, and personal expenses. That would only leave about $12k for room board fees and books.

The schools that would admit an ACT 27 and 3.4 GPA are not the ones that give int’ls aid.

Does the $20k per year include travel, books, a laptop, winter gear if you end up in a northern location, and other personal expenses?

Louisiana tech? SUNY Plattsburgh? Prairie view A&M?
If you know German or French you can try Germany or France where that budget would suffice.

@“aunt bea” I have applied to Union College under ED1.I would love to learn engineering in the liberal arts environment. But I thought the net price calculators are only right for US students?
@DadTwoGirls The 20k/ year does not include travel, books, laptop, winter gear or personal expense. It only includes tuition and room&board fees. Can you please help me to find some colleges that fit me?

You can get a general idea of the minimal costs with the NPC’s.

All of the universities are in different settings with different sized populations. (Rural, urban, suburban; north, south, east, west; large-small sizes)
You need to check the websites for what you think will fit you.

You applied ED to Union College - which means if you are accepted, the decision is binding and you will be expected to attend. Did you run the NPC to see what the costs will be for you? Their tuition and room and board is nearly $70,000 per year.

Have you looked at Canadian universities? There are some where that budget would be sufficient or almost sufficient.

@DCCAWAMIIAIL I have requested for the need-based financial aid from Union College. I hope they will provide enough financial aid package since this is my dream school.

U of Wyoming may cost about that much, as most students win scholarships, without the flights to and from Vietnam, in Laramie Wyoming and offers international students scholarships.

You are talking about Union College in Schenectady NY? Thats a private school. You certainly can get out of the binding early decision though if you cannot afford it. I don’t see how they can force a Vietnamese student to attend.

The OP wants badly in to the highly selective Union, not out. In any case, geographical convenience should not be associated, even tangentially, with a desire to not fulfill an ED agreement.
