Help me with dorm options!

Hey guys,
I got into NYU and as of now, I plan on attending this fall.

This question is directed towards current students and prospective freshmen who may be well-versed

I'm sort of overwhelmed by the amount of options available. I'd like a fairly social building with a single roommate. I hear all NYU dorms have private bathrooms, is this true? Also, what are the main differences between traditional and apartment styled dorms? I also plan on using the gym frequently, so which residential building is closest? Are the fitness facilities at NYU even worth it, or should I keep my current gym membership (I live in Brooklyn)? I prefer a quasi-private place where I can still meet people.

Unfortunately, you don’t get to choose how many roommates you get. Most of the freshman dorms have either two or three people in a room, with the three-person rooms proportionally bigger unless it is a low-cost room, in which case it is smaller. Some of the buildings also have suites with two or three rooms with two to three people. I think that Founders may be all doubles in a suite (not totally sure). Most of the rooms in Third North are doubles in suites. Brittany has a mix of single rooms with two to three beds and two room suites with either two doubles or a double and a triple (and has just been renovated so it is super nice). I think that Hayden is also largely doubles/triples not in suites. Rubin is non-suite doubles and triples. UHall is I think mostly doubles in two room suites. If you google the NYU Housing wiki (or the NYU housing guide on NYU Local) there’s some more detailed info.

Yes, all dorms have private bathrooms for each room or suite. The only difference between traditional and apartment style dorms is that apartment style dorms have kitchens. All of the buildings are fairly social freshman year, but if you want really social, exploration floors tend to be more close knit.

NYU has two gyms, Coles and Palladium. Third North and Founders are closest to Palladium, and Hayden is closest to Coles. However, I’ve heard that the gyms get ridiculously crowded most of the time, so you might be better off keeping your current membership if you don’t want to have to elbow past people to get to whatever equipment you need.

*I think Hayden might be closed for renovations this year? Not positive.

jazz, Thanks for your reply

I’ve been browsing and I seem to like third north so far the most. I don’t mind having a second roommate, as long as things are kept proportional. Honestly, private bathrooms matter the most to me haha

And yes I’ve been reading some reviews, and it seems as though both nyu gyms are frequently overcrowded. I may just transfer my gym to 24Hour Fitness and forget Palladium/Coles.
