Help me with IGETC please!

Hello!

I've been lurking on here for quite a while and am finally joining the discussion.

So here's my first question: I know that to transfer to a UC, you need at least 60 units, correct? I have been using IGETC to plan out my classes so far. Obviously, if you only take the required amount of courses that IGETC specifies in each area, it does not add up to 60.

For the remaining credits, do you basically just go through the IGETC paper and pick/choose additional courses until you reach 60 or is there some special way of picking the correct courses that I'm not aware of? I know if there's pre reqs you should try to take those.

Thanks so much for any help!

Well, most majors require prereqs that will usually fill the void of those additional units needed. I know I needed to take 12 additional units for my major that were not apart of IGETC. And the prereqs vary from UC to UC, so you should really look into that.

^^ Yeah, most majors have a lot of pre reqs but the ones I’m leaning towards (Communication at USCB and Women’s Studies at UCLA) either don’t have many pre reqs that are articulated or they aren’t offered at any of the CC’s in my area. :(

Lexi2008 - you should check out the UC transfers part of the discussion. But since I’m here anyways I’ll try my best to answer it.

Since you followed IGETC (not required but is another way to complete the lower division GE’s) and I’m assuming you finished your prereq’s for your specific major in communications towards the schools (UCLA and UCSB) you are applying. Then I would suggest you double check that you followed the IGETC and the prereqs for those schools and if you did finish them then go ahead and sign up for some additional coursework from the IGETC to transfer over to reach the 60 minimum transfer units to reach junior standing.
