Hi! I’m currently a junior taking APUSH. I’m aiming for a 4 on the APUSH exam (maybe even a 5). Anyways, my teacher is really bad and we’ve only done one practice dbq. I’m confused on how to cite the documents. My teacher suggests to use the titles of the document such as: “”[Title of the Document]" argues…"
I thought we weren’t suppose to use leading clauses to address the documents? Also how should the format of the DBQ be like?
Also, if anyone is willing to proofread my DBQ, please PM me! It would be greatly appreciated.
Typically, leading clauses are not the best way to go about writing a DBQ. My teacher recommends writing in a POV and then citing the document like this (Document 1) after you end your sentence. Typically a DBQ format goes like this:
Intro
- Leading statement and a road map talking about where your essay is headed
- Thesis statements are usually supposed to be at the end of the first paragraph
Body Paragraphs
- Two documents make a group, generally try to have around 3 body paragraphs, but I have seen some people do well with only two
- Make sure to do POV on most if not all the documents, make sure you are not just restating the source’s claim meaning look at why they might have said what they did (if you don’t recognize the author, check the year to help understand the events going on during the era)
- Use all of the documents or all but one
Make sure that you do not forget to add synthesis into your essay somewhere. When you do, it’s generally recommended that you make it at least three or four sentences.
Good luck I hope you get a five. Let me know if you need anything else pertaining to AP essays
