Help me with my little problem?

Lately I've been doing a lot of research on collegeboard and looking through some college research books. My options are very limited since my GPA is horid and my SAT's are mediocre. I plan to pick up the slack in college and make a complete 180. I've look through a lot of the threads on this site and I feel alittle out of place but I'll give this a shot anyway.

Colleges I'm highly considering, not sure if their longshots or not... Help me out?
U of Ohio (Athens) -- sister is alum
U of Alabama (Tuscaloosa)
U of Arkansas
Temple U (Philadelphia) -- sister is alum

I'm a senior this upcoming year and I currently have a 2.6-2.7 GPA cumlative. My SATs were 1640.. 500 writing, 600 math, 540 reading.

If you could just give me an idea where I stand, and some tips for the upcoming year. Primarily if I should partake in any extra activities. I play varsity soccer and I'm not behind in any units or credits.

PS - I'm from PA.
Thanks for your attention

Good shots for Ohio and Temple. Can't tell about Bama. Ark probably not. The biggest thing you need to work on is grades! Forget about a 180 in college. Do it now! That is the most useful thing you can do for your admittance possibilities.

I plan on doing spectacular this upcoming year, but I'm not sure how much effect that will do on my GPA when I've already applied for colleges. My #1 choice right now is most definetly Alabama since the expenses aren't that much out of state as opposed to Ohio. My parents are willing to spend what they spent on my older sister who went to Temple In-state, anything else I need to take loans out for.

Anymore suggestions, comments, criticisms?

Bump**

I have some new colleges I've found, give me some feedback on what you think is my likelyhood of getting in...

Arizona State U
U of Auburn
U of Tennessee (Knoxville)

Bama: match
Ohio: Match
Arkansas: safety
Temple: Match
ASU: match
Auburn: Match/reach
Tennessee: Reach

Suggestions:

Indiana University

Purdue University

St Johns University: New York City.. has solid programs.

University of San Francisco: if u dont mind going far away

Loyola Chicago: In my opinion way better than Loyola NOLA

Loyola New Orleans

Depaul: in Chicago and has solid programs

George Mason University

University of New Hampshire

University of Rhode Island

University of Vermont

OK, alright what does reach mean? And do you honestly think I am safe applying to Arkansas? Sweet. I've looked at Purdue and I'm not sure I have what it takes to be a boilermaker, are you pretty sure about your predictions?

I don't know why people are saying that Ohio University Athens is a safety. they report their average GPA as 3.3 - and that is probably in state. It will be harder from out of state.

You might be in a tough spot with that GPA. How about one of the satellite campuses to Penn State?

By the way, you can find most admissions stats on collegeboard.com. You should check them there for sure, and not just rely on what people tell you. Good luck and work really hard senior year.

Yea im positive about u getting into Arkansas. its really not that hard. but do u seriously wanna go to Arkansas? If ur instate I understand because of In state tuition but if ur OOS why would u even wanna go there?

Purdue: yea im pretty sure ull get in. they accept 85% of the students and their stats althoug a little above u, are still nto that far off. average gpa of 3.4. ur SAT are def int he range for Purdue... u should be fine.

My top 2 choices atm are Alabama and Ohio... I know I'm not in the best situation in terms of my GPA but I'm looking to move away and see what other surroundings are out there, I'm ready to pick up and leave the northeastern lifestyle behind and see what's out there.

:O I see....
Well
- Arizona State is another viable option
- University of Arizona as well

A few in Florida Worth trying:

Florida International

Florida Atlantic University

Rollins College: Gorgeous School in orlando, Florida but $$$

Stetson

ASU is pretty cheap OOS. That might be a good option. Look into it.

U of A is cheap as well, but it's much harder to get into. I believe that OOS applicants are required to have a 3.0.

Although, I'm also going to note that it wouldn't be a guarantee. Make sure you have an ultimate back-up. Such as an in-state satellite school.

Ohio U is really nice. Give it a shot.

You cant go wrong with Temple esp. in state. What school are you at?

I go to a huge school in PA called Parkland.. I'm not even close to top 50% but neither are people with 3.6-3.7's. One of the more competitive public schools in PA.

Dont really know Parkland. Allentown eh? 65% to college isnt that good compared to a lot of schools in our great state, though.

I hate how I slacked off my first 2 years, and I want to make it into Bama soooooo bad. Ohio and WV would be nice too :). Here are the stats to Bama/Ohio/WV -- I still don't look like a long shot? Do my chances look slim/good/very good/not happening?

More comments and feedback would be highly appreciated.

I was a lackluster high school student. I went to OU in Athens, probably the most beautiful school in the state, if not the midwest. It was the first university built west of the Allegheny Mountains, and the main green is patterned after Harvard's (they didn't have much to go by back then). The newer buildings were built to keep in the red brick Georgian feel. The campus was SOOOOOOO fun, and the school of Journalism (was....is?) one of the best in the country. I graduated Magna Cum Laude with a dregree in Journalism, had the time of my life, made great friends and was really challenged. My Daughter is an uber-achiever and wants an urban sophisticated school, so no O-U for her, but I would be thrilled if my son went there. Now that I'm reliving the college thing with my D, I'm seeing just how much OU had to offer. It is by far a nicer campus than the vast majority of schools she's looking at. I like your attitude, if you want to become a student, you can do it at Ohio, just make sure your'e not easily distracted by the free-flowing beer!

^ I totally agree with you salem1. My son looked pretty seriously at OU - and they offered him a ton of money as an out of stater - but he isn't going there. The campus IS beautiful. How come Ohio can have public schools that look like that, and we have here in New York State, ummm, SUNY?! :( It seemed to be a very personal place, and yes, the partying might be a problem for some kids, but overall it seemed like a great school.

This is a bit off topic, maybe not, but how is the town around Ohio U? I was much younger when I used to visit the campus when my sister went there. I remember it have such a beautiful midwestern feel to it and I knew it was going to be a college I was gonna look at seriously when I got older. When I say town around Ohio U, I mean clubs/bars/activities around campus? I'm aware it's a small town and my sister wouldn't have traded her experience there for anything.
