Help me with some info please! :) Transfer student!

Hey guys, I'm a transfer student and I am in the process of applying to UR :D
It seems like a great school and I've heard amazing things about it! Only the food is rumored to be a little less attractive, except for Dinosaur BBQ :P

I just had a few questions that I was hoping you guys could answer! Am really interested in UR and hoping I'll get in, it's one of my top 2 choices so :D

First, what is the tunnel system ? :P sounds pretty cool, no idea what it is! :P

what are zip cars ? I read someones comments on visiting campus, and they said you could get a zip car to get around campus or something :P

interview for transfers ? I heard interviews were very good to have, and well, I feel that I'm a pretty good interviewer. Do they do interviews with transfers? If so, how do I get one? I live in Hawaii, but will be going back home to Sweden(Europe :P if you didnt know) in about a month, dont have plane tickets, so I could maybe go by UR on the way home and have my interview/visit campus :)

what are the people like ? I dont mind 'nerds' at all, in fact, even though most people would class me as more of a jock-kinda guy, I always feel more at home with 'nerds'. I am basically just a nerd on the inside who has been lucky to be good at sports etc.. Anyway, I really need people around me who CARE about school and not just partying, that way i get more motivated myself :)

fraternities - I dont want to ONLY study though, Id like to party and stuff :) I was wondering, is it easy to get into a fraternity? How about for transfer students ? I will be transferring in for junior year(minus a few credits probably) Could I join a frat ?

Also, the website says UR is transfer friendly, what does that mean ? that it takes a lot of transfers ?

anyone know average stats for transfers ? :)

I am an international transfer currently at a US university.

Have 3.55 GPA, mainly due to my hating my schools to a point where I despise it and can barely even bring myself to go to classes.. Theyve just been pulling too much stuff, from not providing necessary lab equipment, to dropping my major AND changing me to another one, WITHOUT telling me, and sooo many other things.. and then claiming they are one of the 'top universities in the nation' its soo frustrating.. well I'm not going to rant about it, I could fill pages.. i mean, seriously, there are homeless drugaddicts over the whole campus!!! im not kidding! i guess an interview to explain it all would be good for me..

No SATs, but theyre not required.

I think my essays will be fairly good-excellent :)

Got a few pretty good recs, including a CHEM teacher saying im in the top 2-3% of students hes ever taught :) And I scored of the the schools highest scores ever on the American Chemical Society test for GEN CHEM :)

Any information you could give me would be GREATLY appreciated and helpful! Also, feel free to add comments about other things that I have not listed! :)

Thanks in advance!

I can’t answer much of the questions about transfers, but I can answer some:

 1. The “tunnels” are hallways underground that connect all the academic buildings. You can go from class to class without going outdoors. Student organizations are also granted permission to paint certain areas of the tunnels according to a schedule, to do things like publicize upcoming events, etc.

They do not, however, connect to the dorms. You still have to go outside to get from your dorm to the closest academic building.

2) zip cars are cars that you can rent by the hour. Very popular and I believe there’s a waiting list to join the program; you have to pay a registration fee.

4) There is almost every type of kid at Rochester; you won’t be the only one good at sports who is also serious about school. For all the organizations that my daughter has joined, including her sorority, school comes first. A kid is excused from virtually any commitment (I don’t know about sports practices) to study for an exam or go to class. They’re serious but not competitive; my d calls it a “chill” environment.

5) I don’t know how easy it is to join a frat as a transfer, but I know that there are a lot of fraternity activities/parties/etc. open to the entire campus. And sometimes the frats will have mixers with other campus organizations, including sports teams (not just with sororities).

Good luck with the transfer!

UoR is a great school, a very academically rigorous one. As Chedva said there is a nice mix of kids there and the faculty and staff are very helpful and friendly. If you visit end-of-April/May the campus is in full bloom with cherry blossoms and magnolias. If the weather is not an issue for you it is a very nice school. You can customize your course schedule which gives you a lot of flexibility. They have very good departments in humanities, pre-med type science courses, physics and other sciences, a respectable business school, great music and med school. Not so much in engineering. I’d highly recommend going for an interview so that you can get a feel for the place.

P.S. In the interest of full disclosure, many people in my family, including I, have attended Rochester at various times during the last 25 years!

To get an interview, all you need to do is request one through the admissions office. If you do get a chance to visit campus, you can interview then. (But be sure to arrange this in advance of the visit.)

If you aren’t able to make a Rochester stop, still call or email and ask about the possibility of having an interview with one of UR’s traveling representatives. Or a phone or alumni interview.

P.S. Since you’re currently in Hawaii, be prepared for some drastically different weather at UR. My d has been lamenting that the trees haven’t even budded in Rochester yet. And that it snowed this week.

hey guys, thanks a lot for the quick and good responses
thats cool about the tunnels, i bet its awesome in the winter! and the zipcars sound like fun
ok good, im glad its not too much of one thing! i really am a very wide type of person, so i like doing a lot of different things :)

i just talked to my parents and they said it could be a good idea that i stop by there on the way, only problem is getting to and from campus… i dont have a car, and i guess itd be pretty expensive to take a cab… depending on where i would go from ofc… like if i land in new york, maybe theres a bus that goes up to UR? ok cool, i havent finished my app yet, so ill do that, and then talk to the admissions office and see what i can do

yea, i heard its got a good pre-med and science program  i really really like the fact that it seems like such a free and open school where you can basically do whatever you like, in terms of classes that is :stuck_out_tongue:

wow drzhivago, thats awesome about your family, i guess youre pretty hooked up then  are you currently there or have u graduated already ?

oh you can do a phone interview too ? thats pretty cool  id love to go there though, see the campus and meet the interviewer myself, but i guess if thats impossible, then ill probably go for a phone one  does anyone know how much of an affect, an interview has on admissions ? im really getting excited about UR :stuck_out_tongue: been reading a lot about it lately and just gets better and better!

oh and, thanks for the warning, but im from sweden(born and raised) so im used to the cold  really miss it to be honest!

again, thanks for the info  id love any other info ! i must say, UR is AMAZING at marketing itself! i filled out the part 1 application, and i love that they send me emails, not too many so that it become spam, but enough to make me not forget them  and theyre videos and things are just awesome! it seems so great! :D

at the moment, ive applied to USC, and Ucolorado @ boulder and im applying to UR, and i am liking UR more and more every day! :stuck_out_tongue: i really love that it seems to have such a great university feel while still being small enough to be intimate!

i really hope i get in, but if i do, and i get into USC and boulder, then thatll be a hard decision to make  really love UR but also usc and boulder… but as it looks right now, im guessing my final result would probably be rochester! just keep hearing so much about it from so many people, cant deny its got a stellar reputation in sciences!

ive gotta ask you guys something though… I love snowboarding, and i really really miss it, like a few days ago i watched a snowboarding vid on youtube and almost started crying… :stuck_out_tongue: i really feel that it would be amazing if there were any nearby opportunities for that… im not saying like an hour… but like fairly close so that a weekend trip would be possible! anyone know ? because in the this is rochester video i saw some people snowboarding…

thanks! :)

ns89, I was there a long time ago … the most recent grads (5 yrs ago?) are two of my nieces from the integrated med program.

I think there are a lot of ski opportunities for sure, I am not a cold weather person so I am not the best person to ask. I did some cross country skiing while I was there but I had friends who used to ski regularly, almost every weekend. I am sure snow boarding must be quite popular.

Good luck!

ok thats cool  it really shows what kind of school UR must be if youre still interested enough to be on these forums  thats awesome!

ok great! that was basically the only thing that was missing for me… my other 2 choices are either close or semi close so

gonna really try to do well on my application now!
thanks!

thanks chedva :)

ns89-- UR is pretty close to the airport. Cab fare will be under $10. (I want to say it’s $5, but I’d have to ask my d to be sure.)

BTW, if you like snow and Boulder–I’m visiting there at the moment and it’s been snowing since yesterday! The Front Range was simply gorgeous when I flew into Denver yesterday.

Upstate NY can be pretty, esp. in the fall, but IMO nothing is as beautiful as the Colorado mountains–regardless of the season. Rochester (the city) is OK, but I love Boulder! Tons of outdoor stuff to do and if you want skiing-- Colorado beats anything in the East hands down. You get the best of everything out there–great snow and lots of bright blue skies, usually at the same time. (UC runs buses to many of the ski resorts on Friday/Saturday.)

Of course, I’ve lived the US west for almost 30 years so I’m probably biased… (grew up in the East, though–I’d never move back.)

There’s also a direct train between NYC and Rochester; depending where you are in NYC, it might be easier to take the train rather than try to get to an airport. Cab fare from the train station to the campus is probably also around $10.

There is a train from NY Penn Station (Amtrak) usually around $60-70 each way depending on when you book. The cab is $10-$12 from both the airport and train station to campus.
There are alumna representatives who do interviews in other states, so, you may be able to interview with someone in Hawaii itself as well if you would like. A campus visit would be excellent as well.

ok cool  gonna look some of that stuff up and see if i can do anything :)

thanks guys!
