Freshman and Sophomore year I did terribly, got a 2.7 and 2.2 respectively, told myself i'd do great junior year and ended up with a 3.5 or something... Anyways.. Now it's my senior year and every class I'm taking is an AP class, and so far it looks like i'll pull through with straight A's. These aren't joke APs as well, they're the hardest my school has to offer (Physics, Calculus, etc).

I've also taken challenging courses, even in the years I did awful

Anyways I know I haven't said much about myself, just assume I don't have the greatest extra curriculars but I have around a 2,000 or so SAT score. The reason this post seems so.. undetailed and emotionless (idk what i'm thinking of, but I know this sounds stupid) is just because I feel like crap writing this. But basically I want to know, if I can get the recommendations and write truly great essays and personal statements, what are my chances into schools like...

Boston University
New York University
Virginia Tech
Penn State
Georgia Tech
University of Rochester
James Madison
George Mason
University of Mary Washington (I can't actually remember the name if that's not right, I just heard about it at like 5 am and it caught my eye)
UC Davis
UC Santa Cruz
(hahaha yeah right at the UC's.. thought it was worth asking though :|)

or I guess any other colleges you can think of?

I'm not a bad student, and I'm not stupid :( I just for whatever reason didn't do well Freshman and Sophomore year, then my Junior year, I didn't KNOW how to be a student (I know that doesn't make sense :| I don't even know why I couldn't get my act together.) Things have changed now though, I just wish it had been sooner.

"Now it’s my senior year and every class I’m taking is an AP class, and so far it looks like i’ll pull through with straight A’s. "

How long have you been back in school? Anyway, senior grades don’t matter for UC’s. Have you calculated your UC GPA? I believe it must be 3.0 to apply instate, 3.4 OOS.

IF you can get great recs, raise your SAT score ~100 points, write a stellar essay explaining your circumstances, AND get A’s senior year, you have a chance at some of your schools. If you’re in state, Penn State will accept you to one of your campuses, maybe even UPark if you’re improving significantly.

As far as some of them, like Georgia Tech, NYU especially - these are extremely tough. Most people have 3.6+ and your GPA is sitting under 3. There’s really no way these colleges can admit you unless you have a VERY good reason, which doesn’t seem to work since you said you don’t know why you did bad. If you had some type of medical problem, family related death, etc., this is justifiable in your common app.

Boston University- Lowish to mid reach.
New York University- High reach.
Virginia Tech- Mid to highish reach.
Penn State- Match, maybe a high match.
Georgia Tech- High reach.
University of Rochester- High reach.
James Madison- Match.
George Mason- Low reach.
UC Davis- Reach.
UC Santa Cruz- Match.

Make sure to keep all As, and try to get your SAT up another 100 points, that would help a whole lot! And write great essays. Best of luck, mi amigo(:

JMU looks at 9-12. Seems like 96% had gpas 3.25+.
GMU looks at 9-12; 85% gpa 3.25+
U Mary Wash 79% gpa 3.25+
These numbers from collegeboard.

If you do get a 4.0 first semester sr year, according to what you’ve told us, you’d probably be a hair away from a 3.0. Don’t know if what you noted is for solids only.
Yes upward trends are good. But, you might want to look at schools with a slightly lower profile, to be safe.

A few more things about UC.'s; you need a year of performing art, only UC approved honors classes and AP’s are weighted for the UC GPA (that means OOS honors classes are not usually weighted), only “A-G” classes count toward the UC GPA, the minimum UC GPA will most likely only get a student into UCM and maybe UCR, the deadline is NoV 30th, no LOR’s looked at, and there is unlikely to be financial aid it costs about $55k/yr out of state.
