Hi there! I have 2 weeks to decide where I am going. I have been accepted into Ole Miss and Texas A&M. I want to pursue architecture but I am not even 100% on that idea, it is just the thing that interested me. I live in Texas right down the road from A&M. Ole Miss doesn’t have architecture to study but I got accepted into the engineering program and I could go get my architecture degree as a graduate? or that is what someone told me. If all else fails I can just go to Blinn JUCO for cheap to knock some basics out of the way. Advice please?
Would you be paying OOS for Ole Miss or were you given merit scholarships to get costs down?
What are your parents saying about how much they’ll pay each year?
If your parents will pay for TAMU, then go there. If not, then the Blinn to TAMU route may end up being your affordable choice.
Do NOT take out much in loans for an Arch degree. There are a good number of unemployed or underemployed newish arch grads.
I have talked to students that are more concerned about going to TAMU because many from their HS go there, etc. But TAMU is a very big campus with very big engineering programs and it will be a whole new experience (outside of being close to home - which for many is a plus for convenience for occasional weekend home and for school breaks). Even if Ole Miss is being generous with scholarships, make sure that what is attracting you makes the school better for you. Arch degrees often are over a 4 year degree plan - I know a student did UG at MS State but then had to take a 5th year at Ole Miss…he was from AL but established MS residency during UG and before his 5th year at Ole Miss.
You can have many more options if you change your mind into other programs at TAMU, a much more diverse university. What is attracting you to Ole Miss? Cost/benefit and other factors with your decision? Maybe re-visit schools; study online each school’s degrees/course catalog. Is it important to finish UG in 4 years (or the length of arch program) and do you think you will get grad degree?
I don’t know how much TAMU is compared to courses at Blinn; when I was at TAMU years ago, in-state costs were super low at both. Do you have a summer job, and is Blinn the closest CC?
One does need to be passionate in arch eng because many do struggle getting into their careers - agree about unemployed and underemployed.
What is the net cost for each college?
What state do you live in?
Thank y’all for the great advice! I am not positive that I want to do architecture, it just interests me. I hate having to decide what I want to do for the rest of my life right now. I live in Brenham Texas, where one of the Blinn locations is located. Ole Miss would be a little bit more expensive (2,000 a year) and I want an out of state experience. I started the college search a little late haha. If I was being smart, I would go to Blinn and continue the search for at least one semester. the net cost for each is 30,000 and 32,000. I am also interested in joining rotc so the price would go down slightly.
