I have just received a letter which no one really likes: a wailist one from Peddie.

Please know how appreciative we are that Son elected to apply to Peddie School. This year, however, we had many qualified candidates apply, more than we could possibly accommodate given our very limited number of available spaces. On behalf of the Admission Committee, I am writing to inform you that, while we are not able to offer Son a place as a student for September 2008, after careful and thorough review, we wish to offer Son a spot on our Wait List. By definition, the Wait List represents those students whom we would gladly welcome into the class had we a few more spaces available.

How can I improve my situation now ? I am going for Peddie only.

nns91 -- it may be more than just finances. From past posts, you are currently a junior and an international (but attended a US high school for 11th and 11th) correct? Your grades looked good, but test scores and ECs were just ok, nothing spectacular (I am not trying to be mean -- just realistic).

did you apply as a repeat junior or for senior year?

Not only is financial aid limited (particularly for internationals) but spots are also very limited for internationals and for juniors and seniors.

You need to be realistic -- you are unlikely to come off the waitlist and even if you do, Peddie is unlikely to be able to give you significant FA. that is just how it all works out.

Your best strategy is to accept the spot on the waitlist and update Peddie with any new information (any significant awards that you have recently received, third quarter grades if they are excellent) and perhaps an additional letter of recommendation (it should be spectacular). also write them a letter indicating your continued interest in Peddie and make sure you tell them why you really want to attend Peddie.

If you think that FA was an obstacle, you can revisit the decision to ask for FA with your parents -- but if they truly can't/won't send you to BS without FA, then you can't do anything about that hurdle.

At the same time, you need to figure out what you plan is if you don't get off the waitlist. As I said before, you are unlikely to get off the waitlist AND get the FA you need.

I am going for repeat junior. I know it's tough and to be honest, we can contribute about 7000/ year and our income is less than 20 000/year. That's the problem I think.

My 3rd quarter score now is about 98/100. Should I send it over ?

I just got onto high honor roll of the 1st quarter and just participated in Finger Lake Robotics Regional competition. Should I add them also ?

I think the problem is a combination of needing financial aid and being international -- to be honest, many international kids apply needing FA and your stats may just not be on the same level as theirs. You just don't know.

I would send them any info you can -- it can't hurt, but do make sure you are making other plans for next year.

Oh, I also thought I would mention that schools don't even begin to go to their waitlist (if they do at all) until after mid-April, so you might wait to send any updates until closer to that date. right now, admissions offices are taking a well-deserved break!

however, if your psats had been higher, it could have made adifference because sophmores who applied for junior year had higher scores. And you have good grades, but even people with so so grades have psat scores higher than you. It could also be hard being an asian applicant because they get soo many. However, i wish you the best because you deserve this opportunity!!
