I'm new here and I really didn't know where to post this so I'm super duper sorry if I got it wrong.

But I just started my senior year. My GPA is around a 2.7 give or take a bit. SAT scores are M: 630 R:630 W:690. I have done the same 2 sports for 3 years and plan to continue this year as well. I have done speech and debate for 2 years. A little bit of community service. The only AP I've taken is psych. I am from Hawaii and am Pacific Islander.

I know I'm not a very good student but I have had a really rough high school career due to family issues. My college counselor said that my SAT scores help push the fact that I'm not as dumb as my GPA makes it seem.

But I'm honestly not sure what schools I want to go to so I'm not so much asking you guys to chance me as to give me schools I should apply to. I was mostly looking at schools in Washington, Oregon, Northern California, and all of the East Coast. I don't want midwest schools.

Sorry this is so long but time is ticking and I need to find schools I have a chance at. Thanks so much.

Hi. To help you pick out a college that is right for you, it would help to know what your interests and extracurricular activities are. Do you know what you plan on majoring in or what fields interest you the most? There are also many other factors that balance into the equation, such as if you have a preference for school size or location.

I plan to major in either psychology or sociology and minor in the other. I have done wrestling and judo in high school but I don’t really plan to continue in college. I am also involved in various music and performing ensembles. I would prefer at least a medium-sized school. My high school has around 450 in a grade and I would sort of want it at least the same size or bigger. As for location, I stated my preferences in the original post. I don’t care what the city is like as long as it isn’t in like the middle of nowhere. If it is in a small town, a larger city close by would be preferable. But honestly, I don’t care too much about the location.

Well your GPA is in the lower range for the best psychology programs. To be considered for better programs, you should try and work hard to bring up your SAT scores. You have to be able to explain your grade situation to most of these colleges. The best psychology programs with higher acceptance rates are University of Wisconsin Madison and University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. You may not be interested because these are in the midwest. Even then, your GPA is in the lower range for these schools and you will REALLY have to sell yourself to them. It is not going to be easy. I suggest you take a look at the USNEWS A schools for B students. You can see the best colleges for your GPA range and make a decision based on what you learn. Good luck.

thanks so much. i know im going to have to work to sell myself well to schools in my essays and things. i also am going to interview with some schools so i think that may be a good chance for me to explain my situation.

The most important question: what can you afford? Your GPA makes schools that meat financial need and merit scholarships unlikely. Budget will need to lead school choices.

I would suggest to look into Lewis & Clark college (in Portland but not downtown), University of Puget Sound (not as Urban as Portland, but Tacoma is pretty big), Santa Clara University (very good school in a small city), University of Rochester (great school in a large city in NY), University of Miami (Fl) (in Miami, self-explanatory).

In my opinion all of these are great. A couple of them might be reaches because of your GPA but maybe you can get the GPA up this semester, I don’t know. I wish you best of luck.
