Help: Mechanical Engineering

I am an accounting graduate rethinking my choices. I am actually about to get my masters in accounting and really realizing that telling myself, "I like it enough," isn't good enough to go for another year of school into a career I don't even enjoy. Hell, the money, at least at the job I was offered (Big 4 firm) isn't even worth it considering they work you long hours.

Anyway, I wanted advice on schools for mechanical engineering. Some requirements:

Cheap tuition. Or perhaps scholarship possibilities... ? Just don't wanna rack up too much debt (35k now). I graduated with a 3.98 from Binghamton and if internships or some EC stuff matters, have that. Dunno if I'd be eligible for any aid, but hope so... hell, I'd need it more than anyone getting their first degree. :(

Accelerated track by taking summer courses and such. I want to graduate fast. The faster, the better. Hopefully my SUNY Binghamton degree gen. ed. courses can cover all requirements. I really don't need humanities and all that.

With regards to Binghamton, was (well am, but if do this need to remove myself from program) there for the masters in accounting program. While in Bing these next semesters want to take any introductory engineering stuff needed. The future college would need to be able to take these transfer credits. Also any suggestions on plausibility of that is helpful... I know I can't be accepted into any program only 3 weeks before fall semesters start, but do wanna get a head start. Fine with taking online courses and what not.

The NY Hudson area, or even NYC, would be nice, but willing to go elsewhere I suppose.

I'm not just looking for schools to go to, but just general advice really. Since I'm lost on what to do here and how to go about it if I wanna pursue this second degree.

Any help appreciated.

look at a engineering school in the SUNY area. Buffalo and Stony Brook are regarded as the best engineering school in the SUNY system.

Why move to a major that is so different from your UG? You’d be totally starting over. And Mech E will be hard, especially if you don’t have the Calculus background.

Maybe look at an MBA? Then you’d have much less schooling to do and could branch out into something you might enjoy more.

Are SB and Buffalo willing to take people with bachelors? Problem is that a lot of schools want you to do as Erin’s Dad suggested, get more advance degree, in your field or related.

And I understand that Erin’s Dad… but I like engineering, tough or not. Yes, not much of a calc background, but think of me as a high school student then. Someone who wants to jump into it because they think they’ll have a passion for it. Scary thought since who knows if I really will love it. However, I do in fact know I dislike accounting. I know that.

I have job offer for a Big 4. Do not want to work there. I do not want to be any type of industry internal auditor either or have anything to do with auditing really. I guess if I stick with it now (can’t just get MBA now, woulda wanna work a few years first to get to good program if did that) then can maybe get into something else? But what else?

At best I’d think maybe I’d enjoy consulting of some sort. Or as a manager or upper level person, one that did not deal with accounting BS to be honest.

I just do not want my life, beyond these next few years if I must, have to deal with accounting.

But then, if that’s the case… do I bother with a CPA? I mean, I could get public accounting experience to get it certified, I’ll have my bachelors/masters. I’ll have as much as you could want for someone in the field… but then jump out? Is there a point and will it even help me that I have a CPA and masters in accounting and not in accounting?

I just dunno to do cuz that’s my conclusion. I don’t want accounting. Especially if it entails long hours during busy season that will make me miss out on life at home. If I at least enjoyed my work, then fine… but for something I don’t really give a **** about, why?

Sorry for the rant…

Anyway, an MBA is an option still, but need a few years of schooling. And then even so, I truely do feel I’d enjyo engineering. But then again… everyone ends up being at upper level management and not even engineering anymore if they plan to make a better living.

So then, what’s the difference I suppose.

I just know I cannot revolve my work around accounting/auditing for more than a few years.
