I'm currently in an eight year med program that does not require me to take the MCAT to go to med school. I understand how lucky I am, but my first year was just not what I expected.

Luckily, I was accepted to some really great schools, but have narrowed it down to Wellesley, Georgetown, and Brown for the Spring semester. I have visited and like all three schools. I still intend on pursuing medicine.

I think if I got into Brown for the Fall, I would definitely go there, but because I have to wait until the Spring, it makes me a little bit worried. I was thinking about giving my current school another shot this fall semester and try some new activities (I was chosen to be an RA, for example), and if things didn't improve, go to Brown. But it makes me wonder if I'm giving up another semester where I could potentially be really happy at Georgetown or Wellesley.

What do you think I should do? I have to decide really soon...

I am currently a student at Wellesley College (though I am transferring out) so I thought I’d give you my perspective on that school :)

Wellesley pre-med (as I assume you are) is actually very great, the science departments are well funded and women there are tremendously hard working. the workload will be at some points unbearable, the labs can be long and there will be a lot to learn (but a lot of girls will be in the same boat as you so you’ll be supported, etc). I will say Wellesley is VERY competitive, not in the sense that “oh…what grade did you get on that neuroscience midterm?” but more like “I am going to finish this lab report three days early, do extra reading, make flashcards, do next week’s reading, etc” I know the program demands a lot of time and you really need that motivation. although, I imagine this is true at many schools.

wellesley is isolated, unless you’ll be attending and have a car, it’ll take you 45 minutes (minimum) to get into Boston and you can feel isolated in that way. the schools near by are Olin (engineering) and Babson (business) so you’re kind of surrounded by two very certain types of guys.

I will say: the campus is BEAUTIFUL although the winter is kind of long it is a very quiet/calm campus. there are a tremendous amount of clubs/resources and some people really find it beneficial to be in a single sex environment for their academic career.
