<p>The reason that Op’s brother did not receive any money is not because NYU determined that the family can afford to pay, but because Op’s brother missed the deadline for submitting application for financial aid. According to OP, NYU is not going to consider him for aid because he missed the deadline.</p>

<p>The challenge with deferring for a year is that Op is not guaranteed to receive enough need based aid to make NYU an affordable option because he did not apply for aid.Other that federal/ state aid (if from NYS) op could be committing to NYU and still not know if it is affordable. Therefore it is not in Op’s brother’s best interest to defer.</p>

Freshmen applicants who have been offered admission to NYU may submit a request to the Office of Undergraduate Admissions to defer their enrollment for up to one year. Students approved for deferral who received a financial aid package with their original offer of admission can expect that the NYU portion of their package (University scholarships and grants) will also be deferred and received in full as originally offered. It is not necessary to resubmit the CSS/Financial Aid PROFILE, and scholarship eligibility will not be reevaluated. Deferred students must, however, reapply for any federal or state funds that were awarded as part of the original package by completing and submitting a new Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) by the following February 15.</p>

<p>Deferred students pay a tuition deposit for the original term of entry, which will be credited to the new term of entry. Deferred students are then considered “Early Decision” admitted students for the new term of entry. They are expected to re-confirm their intention to enroll when our new Early Decision students are expected to do so in January and are held to the same expectations as our other Early Decision students. In essence, students who are approved to defer their enrollment are committed to enrolling at NYU but are simply making that commitment a year in advance.</p>
