Hi all! I'm filling out the common app and for my mother's education level, I'm not sure if I should check high school diploma or college. She dropped out of college after a year and a half. Please help!

I think u should check high school since she doesnt have a college degree

That’s what I was thinking. I just don’t want to get any benefits from that and then they find out she did some college. But I think I’ll check off high school, since I wouldn’t count as first gen anyway. Thanks!

I disagree. I think you should check college and list the college and the years she attended, but not list a degree. That will communicate the reality that she attended but did not finish.

I also think that, despite all the hype one sees on College Confidential about being “first generation,” in the overwhelming majority of cases, it won’t make any difference whether you follow my advice or Muhammad’s.

Adding to the OP’s question, does it make a difference if your parent(s) attended college but dropped out before receiving credits?

Thanks Sikorsky! I added her college and said she did not get a degree
