Daughter is trying to decide between Muhlenberg and Dickinson. She is a studious, career minded student choosing between a neuroscience major and business. She is a pianist, and enjoys dance as a hobby. Does not want to attend a party school, but wants to have a good balance of work and non drinking social opportunities. How is the advising and tutoring support, if needed? Any input from your experiences appreciated. Thanks!

Based on your description of your D, I would pick Muhlenberg.
Good performing arts dept. Not a big party school at all. Very good Academics.

I think I'd also lean towards Muhlenberg if only because their performing arts program is somewhat stronger.

applicantmum the private music lessons are good there, as the school is close enough to the Philadelphia area to be able to attract experienced teachers. My s takes string lessons and likes his teacher very much. The music faculty at the school is excellent and there are also lots of kids who get together to play informally.
The academic support is excellent! I met one of the staff from the academic support office on my last visit down there and I was very impressed. My s has loved all of his professors and just found the students and administration to be the nicest friendliest people. The school was a perfect match for my s and he's very happy there. I highly recommend the school, but can't contrast to Gettysburg because I'm not familiar with it.

Thank you! I have learned so much from all of your knowledge. D came home from school today and annouced she is almost certain it will be Muhlenberg. How would you describe the students? Is there a good mix? How did your son find the Freshman seminars? There seem to be alot of core requirements. Are most students happy there? Thanks again.

applicantmum When s and I first visited Muhlenberg, we were struck with how friendly and happy all the kids appeared. Much more so than a couple of other schools we had seen. I wondered if it would stay that way after s started going there and it did. He immediately made many good friends. Most of the kids on his hall played music and they jammed together. There isn't a LOT of geographical or ethnic diversity but there is diversity of affluence, religion and interests. There's a beautiful performing arts building and also a brand new sports facility.
Yes, there are core requirements, but there are a variety of ways to accomplish them.
S liked his freshman seminar. He got his first choice and the professor was an expert in the area of study. There were only about a dozen students in the class.
One thing that worked out well for s was to go on one of the pre-orientation trips. He likes to hike and he opted for that choice. It gave him a head start on meeting people and he was able to get himself settled in gradually. Also, since he was looking to get a job for work study, he got first dibs by virtue of being there and got a great job in his field of study.

Thanks for all the info. Glad your son is enjoying the Berg! We just mailed the deposit!!!! Can't believe the college quest is over. What seminar did he take? They informed us there are 5 advising days in June, but they select the date we must attend. Do you know if they will change the date if necessary? Three of the five dates are during her senior trip. Thanks
