Help my choose a major - geek not good at math but ok with people. analysis. retail.

Hey folks. I'm trying to narrow my major choice and get finished with school. I never really too HS seriously so I went though with Cs and Bs and D's kind of by the skin on my teeth. I also did that for the first part of community college and slacked. I'm older now and if I dont want to work retail the rest of my life (which I love helping people..) then I better take my education seriously.

I want to do something I'm naturally good at and enjoy. I tried to remember what I was like as a kid.

As a kid I liked technology. I would go talk to the cable man and ask him questions. I disabled escalator systems in stores. I watched my dad assemble an 80806 computer. I remember spending hours and hours making complicated batch files. At the same time I never took programing or computers to to seriously. I never learned a programing language or anything like that, but I like understanding how computers work. I like to break things down into small pieces and analyse them.

At the same time I'm not good at math. So that takes most of my tech options out the window. I dont want to have to do lots and lots of math. Most of the time math I've done is not conceptually too hard, but working the numbers is. 6 -2 is....... uhhh...uhhhhh...uhhhh.... wait..I dont know. That's a bit of an exaggeration of course. It took me two times to get though algebra.

I do like people. I remember learning how internal combustion engine works and I'd go tell my teachers, friends, parents, whoever would listen. Hell, I rode elevators up and down and would ask people what floor they wanted to get off at.

I am still a geek at heart. I like learning new things, Star Trek, Stargate, Technology but I'm not good at math, but I like people and teaching.....

What should my major be? Psychology? MIS? Communications? What do I want to do? Interestingly enough... the people that I know that have a BS in Psychology or communications are all....wait for it....unemployed or working as a waiter.

Look into Human-Computer Interaction or Engineering Psychology - these are kind of psychology with a tech focus, but probably not too much math.

Have you thought about being a teacher? You can major in anything as long as you get a degree.

How about getting certified as an electrician, plumber, HVAC repair person?

Thanks for the suggestions folks…

I have thought about being a teacher. I think doing corporate training or an instructor would be great. It’s probably a long term goal after getting some experience. I dont know if I would do well teaching kids because they, like me, might not really care and you have to worry about them misbehaving. I suppose I’m intimidated by knowing how to handle kids… It is on my to-do list to be a tour guide or announcer somewhere.

Electrician, plumber or HVAC… I’ve thought about this. I do work on my own stuff. If I were in a pinch and was going to get married, or have a baby or something like that, I would do that STAT. It’s not something I enjoy much, unless it’s my own stuff.

I’ve added Human-Computer Interaction and Engineering Psychology to my to-investigate list. Thanks!
