Help! My father hates NYU!

Hey everyone, I need your help! My father sincerely despises NYU. I received an invite to University Day so I think that means I'm in and I'm trying to warm him up to it. For him, I think the turn off is mainly that the tuition and ranking don't balance. (For instance, he has said he would willingly send me to Harvard and pay all four years.) This is Stern that I am talking about, so it is (as we all know) one of the top NYU schools but somehow I don't think he's able to separate Stern from CAS and the slightly lesser schools. So anyway, I guess basically I'm just asking what else do you guys know about NYU (specifically Stern) that can convince my father this is a STELLAR school. Here are some basic facts about my father: he's your average Chinese dad; overly anal--practically had me under house arrest over the summer to make me study for the SATs, and acted very angry every time I wanted to go out with friends finally I had to have them just show up so my dad couldn't say no--also he hates boys which is why he loves BYU (this mormon college in my hometown that has single ed dorms). My father also thinks a LOT of rankings and hiring record and starting salaries for graduates...if anyone has any of those stats that would be GREAT...

Also, does anyone know if many undergrad Sternies go back and get their graduate's degrees? Because I think it would be another plus if I told him if I went to Stern I wouldn't have to go to business grad school (that's mainly why he likes UPenn-Wharton). Anyway, please, please, HELP ME!

aww--i feel your pain, and i visited Upenn a few weeks ago for a model congress, and wharton's buildings are beautiful, so i decided to research a little about stern since it's ranked as one of the top business schools in the country :)

this is the best i could find :(

"Because I think it would be another plus if I told him if I went to Stern I wouldn't have to go to business grad school (that's mainly why he likes UPenn-Wharton)."

That really depends on the career path you take. If you go into investment banking or some other finance type career, chances are it would be hard to get to the higher levels without a grad. degree regardless of your undergraduate school. There are other fields you can work in (such as trading) where you may not need a grad. degree. Its not as simple as saying you won't need an MBA just because you go to Stern or Wharton undergrad.

Why don't you show him the U.S. News rankings? Stern is #5 (for business programs)
Stern graduate school is also ranked #1 (by PrincetonReview) for Best Career Prospects

I just wanna say I totally feel the pain of the Asian Dad thing... sigh

Hey our dads are on opposite ends.
He loves NYU because its a big city -- "trains" me
He hates Harvard cause he thinks it's all arrogant kids who wear their button-shirts under a sweater.
We are Chinese too.

I think the issue here is what other schools besides NYU are among your options. Compare those to NYU and see for yourself.

okay. these stats are off the top of my head, read them all somewhere at some point
but stern undergrad graduates make around the same amt of $ as wharton undergrad graduates because of location and all the stern connections already in the city at these jobs.
there's more internships and stuff generally available.. because it's ny! and if you look at a list of top undergrad business schools, stern is consistently in the top five for different areas.. i don't remember which. but finance is definitely really awesome at Stern.

anyway, good luck. my rents hated the idea of sending me to stern too, because of the lack of campus, until they were told about the opportunities and good job rate post-graduation =P
(plus.. it's relatively close. they looove that.)

stern's finance department ugrad is rated number 2 in the country.

i think the average stern starting income is 57-62k , I cant remember the exact figure. Nearly everyone gets a job among graduation.
