I currently in need of opinions for my son's chances of getting accepted into the following reach schools. Boston College, University of Michigan (Ann Arbor), University of Southern California, Lehigh, and NYU (Stern). He will be applying to the Business schools for each. I would like any insights and opinions on whether you think he has a chance for these schools, and how big or small his chance would be!

ANY OPINIONS WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED! Thanks!!

If he were applying from my son’s school, his chances would not be good at all at any of the schools listed. He is well outside the cluster points of the Naviance charts.

However, there is a lot of information that is not clear that could make a difference. If you could see where he would be in your school’s Naviance graphs, it would be more relevant. I don’t know what sort of school he is attending and what that 4.0 out of 5 means, weighted or not. Also, don’t know the SAT1 breakdowns, but looking at his Math SAT2 score, I’m thinking that the Math part might be very high. Some schools focus more on the 2 parts of the SAT 1., other than the writing. Also what are the scores on the AP exams he has taken, and what is the school’s record on what kids tend to get on AP exams. All of this info would be on the school report that would accompany his transcript. Also are there any Cs and Ds on his transcript or a rising or declining GPA trend.

My friend’s daughter was accepted to Michigan as an engineering major with similar SATs with high math scores. I don’t think you can directly enter UM’s business program. You enter a general program, and then apply to the School of Business for your sophomore year.

I’ve seen kids with similar profiles get into the Kelly School of Busines at Univerity of Indiana in Bloomington, which is an excellent school and also to UPittsburgh’s business program.

As you know, from what you stated, these schools are reaches for him. Good to try. They are not “out of reach” but definitely reaches. If he has some schools that are sure to accept him as well as some schools where he has at least a half a chance, that he has these reaches if fine. Good luck to him.

For what it is worth, my D is applying to many of the same schools. She however has slightly better grades(4.0 on 4.0) and SAT scores (2200+). Here is what we have been told based on Naviance (as cpt says above, that is the only meaningful comparison)

Boston College - Match
University of Michigan (Ann Arbor) - Reach
University of Southern California - Reach
Lehigh - Match
NYU (Stern) - Match

This surprises me because it contradicts what the university websites say - but could be completely based on the number of kids from an individual school applying to a given university
