You need to establish your safety then work from there. A lot of your choices seem like they’re based on name recognition, which is understandable. But, there’s really no reason to have both Cornell AND Columbia on the same list, or Brown AND the University of Chicago; once you get past their relative proximity in the USNews rankings, you’ll discover that’s about all they have in common.

Btw, I think you have an excellent shot at virtually all the LACs on your list since women with science backgrounds are in short supply. But, if you’re willing to look at Wesleyan, Haverford and Pomona for physics, I’d scratch some of the larger universities like Michigan, Cornell and probably Penn as well, just because they have the least liberal-artsy atmospheres of the schools on your list.

Hmm that actually makes alot of sense. I think I might have probably chosen those schools for their rankings. Do you have any recommendations for a good safety? I also already applied to some UCs including ucla, ucb, ucsd and ucsb

It’s very difficult to pick a safety for someone else; ultimately, you’re the one that has to live with the choice. But, just for the sake of argument, which UCs would you definitely not want to go to?
