Hi, I'm trying to figure out the right path for a major so I'm hoping that someone on here can give me some advice. I'm finishing up my GUR'S and need to figure out what I want to major in. My top choice for a career would be working in the entertainment industry, preferably on the business side of the music industry. I would love to work as a band or tour manager or work for a record label. I'm just trying to figure out which majors I should consider in order to have the best opportunity in this.

Currently I've been thinking about majoring in business (not sure specifically which area would be best?) and potentially a double major in communication and a minor in music. Would this be a good path for me to take? I know it would be very difficult to double major and minor so I need to narrow this list down more.

Does anyone have any recommendations that for majors that I should look into?

That’s definitely a connection-driven industry. The tour manager for U2, Bieber, and the like aren’t there because they are the best managers in the entire world, but because they were good enough and had connections. People without college degrees, or those in engineering or sociology will get the gig if they know the band or the right executive.

That being said, I think fiance would be a solid choice for a major. I generally don’t think law school is a good idea because of the huge debt involved and surplus of lawyers, but you should consider entertainment law.

I actually have been thinking about law school recently and specifically a entertainment law focus. If law school ended up being the path I wanted to take, would it be better to just stick with one major and make sure I do well in it?

Would a communications major be looked down upon by law school reps?

Or what about a double major in music and communications, with a marketing minor and the potential of going to grad school to get my masters in music business or public relations?

i’m actually interested in the music business as well! i definitely think something more business/finance/econ-related would be best for your main degree, so if you change interests you’ll still have lots of job opportunities. a minor in music would be good too! but, i think the most important way to “get your foot in the door” is be through your extracurriculars (most colleges have a radio station and a concert planning committee) and summer internships. so, your degree is really up to you, but i wouldn’t want to exclude any future job opportunities by being TOO focused on the music business.

I think I’ve decided that I’m going to double major in communications and music and do a marketing minor. Grad school is also definitely something that I’m considering; either for my masters in PR or music business.
