Help! Need advice.

Last night my school held AP Night, which is an opportunity for students to learn what will be expected of them in the AP classes that they are taking next year. After I finished talking to the AP English Language and Composition teacher, a total stranger came up to me and insisted that I not take the class because she is taking it now and isn't learning anything. When I spoke to some other juniors in the AP class, they told me that the class was easy but never described the AP teacher as incompetent. I'm not sure whether I should take the class or not. What should I do?

TAyk IT! It’s an eesy A, AP credit, plus looks good for seenyor year! Just bc u sine up for it dusn’t mean u hav 2 tayk the AP exam!

honestly, what you get out of a class depends on what you put into it. it shouldn’t matter if the teacher is incompetent or not.
in college you will have professors that couldn’t care less if you learn the material, and they are only there b/c they want to research or whatever. and you are paying for the class. but it is up to you to do whatever it takes to make an A or score high on the exam.
I say take the class, and if you have to self-study to score well on the AP exam, then it will be good prep for college.

Besides, its not really about learning material for that class anyway. The main thing is just to write a lot, and recognize that authors use certain techniques for a reason.

And if worst comes to worst, like StevenW. said, you don’t have to take the exam (although HIGHLY recommended)

What’s your favorite class? I’m sure that’s there’s someone in there who says it’s useless and not worth taking. NEVER EVER EVER not take a class because someone says it’s bad. AP English Language is basically a huge SAT Critical Reading (with a few vocab words you should know) and even if the teacher is incompetent, you can still get an easy 5 because all the info is in the test. You can do well on it and it looks great on your college app, take it, take it, take it.

I would advise you to take it.

I’m in Comp this year, and I’ll just say that my teacher isn’t exactly the fairest/most reasonable teacher. Remember that APs are useful for more than just the test: I’ve learned so much about presenting arguments and using rhetoric this year that I’m glad I learned before college.

It also depends a lot on you. Some people will learn a lot from a teacher, others will learn nothing. (I think most of it is a choice, though) I’ve also heard that it’s an easier AP than Lit, but that’s a whole different discussion.
