Help! Need Science Fair Project for 7th grader...

My son just changed schools into a middle years IB program. His old school didn't do the science fair. Now, he has to complete a science fair project by december 19th. He doesn't want to do a really lame project and really enjoys science and math. his areas of interest are engineering, mathematics and environmental science and physics. we live in the mountains, so geology would also be fun.

there are so many topics out there, it is overwhelming with so little time to do this....any suggestions? any really neat science fair projects you have done or seen? i need something that doesn't require a long time. He also wants something more advanced than the typical (but not requiring a mentor or special equipment -- we don't have time) and he wants something that you don't see every year.

any help would be very much appreciated. He won his school science fair in kindergarten, 1st and 2nd grade before we moved -- so he is really thinking he could do well, but I am doubting it with the early deadline.

thanks!!!

A friend of mine did a cool IB science project a couple of years ago involving a pendulum to create a clock like device able to keep time. He used it to time a music piece. Something like that would be really cool.

I wanted my bro to do this(6ht grade). Test filaments. Experiment with different types of inert gasses, and different materials, and discover the "optimal configuration" if possible(include tungsten as a filament type to get good results ;) ).

My d in 7th grade did an acid rain project - sprouted seeds in water with varying amounts of vinegar for her acid. She used carrot seeds and won 3rd place with it. It was relatively simple to pull off in a short period of time. PM me if you want more details.
