HELP! Need to decide basically tomorrow!

I've been accepted to four schools.
1.) The Merchant Marine Academy
-military school
-free
-basically only engineering
-sole purpose is to create merchant marines

2.) University of Pacific
-Stockton, California
-Perfect Location
-always wanted to be in California
-$37k

3.) Duquense University
-Pittsburgh, Pennsylvlania
-$25k

4.) Boston University
-you all know about BU

Please, consider that I'm basically going to have to pay for this all by myself. I don't want to go to military school, but if I have no option, I guess one has to bite the bullet. I also want to study English, possibly double major with Business or something as well.

So my few questions are:
a.) What do you think of these four schools?
b.) Pacific or Boston?
c.) Is my undergraduate work worth this much money?

the merchant marine academy is a pretty sick opportunity

If you have to pay it all yourself, it seems to me that either your state schools or the merchant marine academy are your options. Paying for private schools alone is pretty impossible. Maybe you should go with merchant marine, and if you do not like it, apply to some state schools for transfer.

DO NOT go to USMMA if you don't want to go to a military school! The service academies are not a walk in the park. You could try OneMom's idea, but if you already know you won't like it, you will only be taking the slot from someone who wants it.

Do not go to the USMMA. It is a great school and a great opportunity but they have 2 majors, Engineering and Deck. Deck is for being a Deck officer on a ship. Even the engineering is limited to Marine Engineering stuff. Keep in mind that you also have a 6 year commitment after you graduate. Do you want to spend the next 10 years in a marine related field such as being on a ship? Or you can go active duty military for 6 years instead.

If you want to major in business and or english and money is an issue go ROTC or something. I think you will like it better than at the academy which is academically very tough and limited in their offerings.

I think you will like UOP which is the other choice I have first hand knowledge about.

It’s Okay. Go to USMMA. Get your BS degree and go to graduate school later on and study your passion, English or Business. Your military background will be a big plus should you enter the business world.

Keep it simple my friend. If one door closes, other door will open for you.

so what did you decide on? today's the deadline, right?

(I vote BU)

Honestly, that should eliminate USMMA.

I've seen people go to a service academy and not want to be in a military school. I can tell you that they were utterly miserable, and left before completing one semester. They also made life suck for those who needed their help (aka all of the freshmen around them).

Join me at BU :)
