It's come to my attention that I'm going to need to declare a major by Wednesday in order to get any type of financial assistance for my local community college. This would be my third semester coming up, and I still have no idea what I want to major in.

However, I do know that I'd like to end up in one of three places: Physical Therapy, Dentistry or Medicine, but I don't want to major in any science field for the sole purpose that if, for whatever reason, I can't go toward any of the three careers I mentioned, I'd be basically S.O.L. The prerequisites for these three paths are virtually identical, give or take Organic Chemistry.

Ideally, I'd like a major that could be a good fallback major in case those three don't work out. I just want to be safe and cover all my bases...

Physical therapist. Doctor. Dentist. All of these are in demand, secure jobs. Mouth, muscle, or whole entire body? That is the question. Med is obviously the hardest. Make your decision.

Thank you for the reply, noisedogood. It’s not necessarily the career paths I’m inquisitive about, because that will unfold for me as I delve further into my studies and research. It’s the idea of the major, really. For each of these fields, I can major in anything I want, essentially, so long as I satisfy prerequisites.

That said, I don’t want to be confined in just science. I’ll have plenty of science in grad school pursuing any of those careers, it’s the idea of a major that COULD potentially offer me a different career path in case, for whatever reason, I don’t go that route (I.E. My grades end up sucking, I can’t pass the MCAT or DAT, etc. etc.)

It kind of sounds like I have no confidence in myself, I know. Which is probably true in the slightest, but at the same time, I like to keep options as open as I can.

You aren’t going to graduate school. You are going to professional school.

Don’t major in Biology. I love biology to death, I am going to do research in biology (through mathematics), but I would never major in it. Lots of applicants to med school who failed to secure a spot have oversaturated the market with that degree.

Tbh, I don’t really think there’s any super secure major outside of engineering, math, or computer science. Maybe Geology.

I don’t know if you are aware of this (although I have no idea what you want to do). If you’re going to do one of these fields, it does NOT matter what major you declare yourself in a community college. It only matters that you satisfy the prerequisites for transfer to a four-year university.

Aka, I majored in math, but I applied to a university intending to enroll as a physics major. Plenty of people pick different majors, such as one of my friends who sent all of her applications as Anthropology, but she chose one of them as Architecture. She’s now an architecture student at Cal Poly Pomona. I was classified as an “LAS - Mathematics and Science” major at my community college. Dunno what that is, but I am an applied math/statistics major that I enrolled as here at my four year university and it doesn’t affect my FA.

So, to be concise: it does no matter what you choose your major as at your community college. It only matters that you satisfy the prerequisites for a major at your college and you MUST declare a major upon transferring to another university via the application.

I’m in a similar situation as well. I’m currently registered as Liberal Arts & Science with a Biology concentration. I’m thinking if I transfer in a year (which is my plan), I’ll apply to my school of choice’s psychology program (since it’s a basketweave major) and possibly double major or minor. I could intern somewhere and go into marketing, PR, or law if I fall out of love with the idea of attending medical school.

Major in what you like.

Declare your major LAS - General Studies if you school gives you that option if you’re undecided.

I know for certain I want to do one of the three above, that would be optimal. I would narrow down my choices between the three by how my prerequisite grades end up being.

I’m interested in Accounting, and it’s where I would intend to go if I major in Accounting and if I do better, and enjoy, my Accounting courses as opposed to my science courses.

Yeah, I think I may actually just lay that plan down. I can’t see a real detrimental factor, can anyone else?
