Help Needed In Choosing Schs.

Hi Guys, I am international from Singapore. I am interested in doing Biology major. So far, I've applied to MIT but that's far too risky for me. But I haven't been able to decide on any other schools.

SAT 1: 780M, 730CR, 600W
SAT 2: 800(Math2), 800(BioM), 800(Chem)

I think I am top 5% of my class. My school doesn't rank, no GPA either. But I've been getting all As.

Prizes won:
Singapore Bio Olympiad - Silver
NTU Bio Olympiad - 4th

ECs:
Guitar Club (won gold for some competition) (year 11 and 12)
Interact club (year 11)
Student Councillor (for year 9 and 10)
St Johns Ambulance Brigade (a sort of red cross organisation) - Was the deputy platoon commander ( year 9 & 10)
Student Archivist ( year 9)

Extra stuff:
Volunteer with Habitat for Humanity --> Mongolia building trip
Some research work at a local university.

well, i guess that's abt it. I think my ECs are quite weak. But please give me some suggestions on where I shld go next.

Johns Hopkins Univ is one I would add. You might also consider Tufts

Well yes i wud say ecs are weak...

BUt less info abt school records given ...though ur scores rock..
Dont worry apply to reasearch based univ s and u will be fine ...ivy league is famous for sciences and biology...

And yes JHU is very reputed for these.... Then Darrtmouth .. also Boston Univ (ull get gud scholarship) has a strong Bio program ++ Purdue also as an safety

You applied for MIT regular decision already???
Do you need aid? If you don't, here are some i recommend:
Boston C, Boston U, Washintgon U st louis, UVa, U Michigan Ann arbor, JHU, Dartmouth, Northwestern (not really in the bio field though.. I think)

If you are gonna do pre-med, pre-law: LACs! williams, vassar, swarthmore, amherst. Plus, Rice has a good pre-med programme that combines a degree with something.. (sorry i dont know but its supposed to be excellent) and Cornell.

UCB, UCLA, UCSD (saftey) (Ucs are number freak schools.. they'll like your numbers), U Southern California (..not a uc by the way)
Pomona.. (you guys agree?. im not sure)

For safteys, go for state schools like Florida state u, u texas, michigan state, etc.. (but choose the ones where you will feel comfortable in, in regards to setting, possible-major field, etc..)

Ok some might not match you but I just spilled everything from the top of my head.. I'm applying to most of these schools and I got stats lower than yours!

Good luck!
(ps, excellent decision in applying to MIT. they love olympiad people)

NoFx... MIT does NOT accept every Olympiad participant/medalist, mind you! They're weird people, the admission folks here. :-/

Hey NoFX, thanks for your list. I can't go for the UCs now, cos I have to serve in the military and neither the military nor UC allow deferment. And I do need aid. Which complicates the matter.

The LACs I am thinking of are:
Reed
Swarthmore
Harvey Mudd

my fellow countrymate.. wad jc r u from?
do u need aid? that's like really important coz if u r, u better not go for the non need-blind ivies and the like which r too popular with other singaporeans (who r more often than not banking on a scholarship). not too sure about colleges which r good in biology... all i noe is dat yale, duke and jhu r quite reputed for bio engineering... but anyway i dun think departmental strength is dat important at US unis coz u r gonna study something else for more than half ur time there... and btw, swarthmore doesn't allow deferment i think.

hey. am from hwachong. you?

I don't intend to take up a scholarship, not because I can't, but because I don't like serving the bonds. They are particularly nasty i think. Heh.

raffles. haha not taking up a scholarship either... partly coz i can't (i'm too cynical for them) and partly coz there are no suitable ones for my major. i'm one year ur senior btw... serving NS now... ultimate waste of time zZz.

if i get an offer from cambridge, then i am not going to bother any more abt us unis.

only that u won't noe whether cambridge offers u a place until u r done with us uni apps...

Yea. That's quite annoying. :P

so will u be applying for finaid to US?

Yep. I will.

Tech schools might wanna look at RIT (Rochester Institute of Tech), Rennsealer something something and WPI (Worcester Polytechnic Institute.

yeah RIT has some gr8 programs
