Posted this in the business majors froum, but the place doesn't seem to be very active...

I've been accepted to 'International business w/ american bus studies' at the University of Manchester. On my the 3rd year I'll attend aa year at an American university, and although the preferred destination is not always guaranteed, I wondered if you lot could give me advice on which uni to pick in terms of prestige (and the reputation of the business school in particular) and non-academic life.

NB. My knowlegde of American universities is close to none.

Current options are:

Babson College, Wellesley, Massachusetts
New York University
Emory University, Atlanta, Georgia
The University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign
The Pennsylvania State University
The University of Massachusetts, Amherst
McMaster University, Hamilton, Ontario
College of William and Mary, Virginia
The University of British Columbia, Vancouver
University of Florida, Gainesville
Richard Ivey School of Business, London, Western Ontario
University of Calgary
Carlson School of Management, Minnesota.

also, just out of interest, how does the University of Virginia (UVA?) compare with these ones, because it's an option at another university that I've got an offer from.

Oh yeah and you can pretty much dismiss the unis in Canada I'm not that interested in studying up there =)

NYU has by far the best business school of the colleges on your list, and UVA's school is similar in prestige to Stern (NYU business). However, UVA isn't nearly as urban a setting as NYU, so if you want to study in a large city go to NYU, or UVA for a typical "college town". Emory wouldn't be a bad choice if you like a bit warmer weather, and a city that isn't as huge as NYC but much larger than Charlottesville.

There just gotta be hundreds of universities in massachusetts... All the ones in Boston plus the University of Massachusetts, Babson College and loadsa others...

yeah i think New York uni uber alles as it is placed in Manhattan, correct me if i'm wrong.

By the way, anyone heard of an university called USC that is in california? It was actually added to the list for the next semester. I'd prefer West coast over East, but then again i'm not sure of this institute's reputation, as it isn't part of the University of Califonia, is it?

USC is better than most in the U of Cal system, all but Berkeley, UCLA and UCSD. Not as good as NYU, but a fairly well regarded business school, especially for those who want to work in California. It's not that well known for business nationally or internationally.

If you're headed back to Europe, NYU is really your best choice.

USC is a great school, but the majority of its students are from the west. It is in a slummy area of Los Angeles. UVA and William and Mary are excellent schools but are in rural areas. NYU is the top school for business on your list, and NYC would be a wonderful place to spend a year. Emory is also good, but you might not like Atlanta. Babson and the others are not particularly prestigious, although they are very solid choices.

NYU definately. If you're going to do study abroad and learn about American culture and lifestyle, there's no other place that'll offer so much as New York City will. And their business is tops.

USC is improving as a school, but it's reputation is only strongest in Southern California. If you're looking at Los Angeles though, then it could be a good choice, but I would still recommend New York over Los Angeles.
