Hey guys I am a senior who is unfortunately stuck with an international status. And double the luck, I am that international who needs aid and scholarships from college to be enrolled.
My family’s green card was applied this month (so chance of having a green card to come out within a year is extremely low as well- unless I take a gap year)
My sat score is low (just exactly 2000) and I have 4.17 gpa. Although I have pretty decent extracurricular activities+work experiences+family background essay, I am really uncertain about myself. I mean what if I get into none? I have heard how there’s always that “oh you are international” card playing in the admission process.
I know it is too late for me to register for January sat as well.
I am applying/applied to University of Illinois Champagne, Boston University, VCU, Virginia Tech, University of Richmond, University of Virginia, USC, Colby college.
For liberal art colleges, I am considering bennington, Merrimack, Manchester, Albion, Scranton, Illinois tech, Elmira in my mind. Any advices/tips?
Do you guys know any other colleges that would fit my profile+give generous scholarshpis?
You have not give enough information for anyone to give you meaningful advice. Are you attending a US high school? What state? Some states give instate status to grads of their high schools even if they are international (NY LOL). What was the distribution of the 2000 across the 3 subtests. Have you taken the ACTs? SATs’s? What courses did you do well in and which not. What is the 4.17 out of? Why would you apply to expensive schools like Bennington if you can 't afford to attend? Bennington, for example, costs about 40K each year after the average amount of aid (about 24K).
Oh I have been living in US for 4 years now. Completed 4 years of high school in us, was out of school for a year in middle school in australia bc of visa problem ( i lived there for 2 years-and when i took a test, they told me to follow my fellow students’ age group). I am living in VA right now.
I was thinking of applying to bennington since it was one of the colleges that said it would offerefinancial aid to international students…i guess not then
4.17 is weighted GPA. My subject scores-us history, word history, math II-are not the greatest either. Gah. More i write this, more depressed i become. (High 600s , >650)
Should I try to take the january sat? I feel like it would be too late though. My scores were 640 writting 650 reading and 710 mathematics. And considering how i had 1820 in october sat…and i pushed it up to here, i dont know.
I already know that these writting and reading scores are maximum even if i take it again . Even my practice scores were arond these scores. I tried everything i could do within my financial limits but those scores are it. Sadly.
I have gotten 800 on math section couple of times but would 90+ make difference now?
I was thinking of retaking subject tests (bio and math II)
I did well in Ap Biologoy- A- (which is considered really good in our highschool as the teacher makes it nearly impossible to get an A)
And ap us history? I was the only one in class to get a 5.
And the rest boring ap classes, i did ok. I took ap lang, ap world, currrenly taking ap chem, ap calc ab, ap econ, ap gov.
Wouldnt it be too late? my mom holds H1b and i am on H4. I have heard that H1b green card process are relatively pushed back now…my attorney said to expect LEAST a year. Taking a gap year?
And also, should i personally contact colleges and tell them i am on green card process? And willing to pay the tuition as a permanent resident status, not international?
My parents have told me that they would defintely able to support me once the green card comes out, as it means more loans available and lower tuitio costs.
I’m not sure about the other schools, but I know that University of Illinois Champagne accepts a lot of international students (more than average). Your SAT score really isn’t that bad, but I realize that it is slightly more competitive being an international applicant.
In terms of financial aid, it might be worth it to take a gap year and wait for the green card. You’ll definitely have lower tuition in general.
Your mother is telling you she can help once you get the green card. without it, your FA is likely to be low. 2010 is not really high enough for full merit (though you might find a few on the yolo site. If you have a green card, you will be treated more generously FA-wise. And you may be eligible for in state tuition.
My plan was either to take a gap year
Or get a loan from my country/my uncle is willing to help, go to college and pay lesser amonunt of tuition once the green card comes out. This way, i dont have to wait one to two years fruitlessly and study.
yes! vtech says:Where applicable, visas allowing the establishment of domicile within the United States… So do I qualify for instate for vtech as well? But the real problem is…I can’t even afford that instate tuition right now w/o scholarships and both UVA and Vtech do not really offer aid to internationals. Same goes for all other schools in VA except for William and Mary+George washington+Washington lee (which I am pretty sure I have such a low chance of getting in as of international profile)
But my mom is really negative about the gap year. Green card process is really unpredictable as you might know
it can take up to three years. Is there a limit in a gap year?
But on the other note…do you believe I should take January sat or retake sat II’s? (I know it would be late but still…I have regrets)
Do you believe I would get in with this sat score?
