Yeah, two kids from her HS theater group who graduated this year will be at Tisch next year. One for performance, one for film (I think). That program really is not what she is looking for. Several kids over the last few years have headed to Fordham, and she likely would not major in theater at Fordham, primarily because of what friends have told her about the ability to take classes outside the major, and the amount of time the major requires. Basically, she is worried that the Fordham BA is basically a BFA by another name.
hey, I went to school in the Bronx…
The only place I’ve ever seen or heard called “Rose Hill” is the Fordham U Bronx campus, by Fordham U itself, in its literature. Nobody else. People here say “The Bronx” and “Fordham”.
It may be the case that a large proportion of the roses in the borough are located in the Botanical Garden these days .
But the Bronx has pockets of interest, yet. (Though most easily enjoyed with a car).
And The Bronx will rise again.
I remember when my parents would get together with their friends and relatives,
often they would bemoan the beautiful neighborhoods they grew up in, particularly in Brooklyn, that had become some of the city’s most notorious slums. Now some of those very same areas are being gentrified. When one of D2s friends said where she was living I could hardly believe it.
At some point the same thing will happen to The Bronx. Those buildings lining and around The Grand Concourse were built as elegant housing for the wealthy. If those neighborhoods in Brooklyn can come back, so can some of the areas in the Bronx that have experienced changes in fortune.
You heard it here first. Now start buying up those buildings…
Of course there are other areas of The Bronx that have always thrived, and continue to do so.
Speaking of the Bronx, what is Arthur Avenue like now? I haven’t been there since I was in college which honesty compels me to admit was awhile ago
My understanding of Fordham BA is that it is much more like a BFA. In the “closer to home” arena - Kenyon has a great BA theater program which allows a wide opportunity to explore multiple interests.
Yep, as I mentioned up the thread, that is the vibe about Fordham my daughter has from talking with former classmates. And Kenyon is on the list, although for now it is “too close to home”
For my D Kenyon was “too small” (well heck yeah compared to NYU and NYC) bit it’s a great place
Arthur Avenue’s ok. A little hard to park, some decent restaurants serving too much food.
I ate someplace there earlier this year , after we went to the Botanical Gardens. good food, lively atmosphere.
I don’t remember which place though. I just look on yelp or zagat’s, I don’t go there enough to really know my way around. I wouldn’t say it’s an outstanding spectator must-see, but it’s more interesting than anyplace else around there if you’re hungry after leaving Fordham.
We go there once in a blue moon, for a change in scenery. Ditto City Island. Truth is we have really good italian food closer to us (italian restaurants are not scarce in NYC metro), and the places we’ve been to there weren’t particularly cheap either.
But if I was in the neighborhood anyway, and hungry, I’d certainly consider stopping there.
@monydad, thanks. Continuing down this Bronx diversion, is there anywhere to stay near the Rose Hill Campus? Right now I have a reservation in Ft Lee, across the bridge. I would much rather stay somewhere on the island though so I don’t have to fight traffic into Fordham in the morning or down to Broadway at night. Seems like my choices are shortstop the city on the way in the night before and just drive across the bridge in the morning to Fordham (and then down to Broadway), drive into somewhere in the Bronx the night before and train around the city or drive into the Broadway area the night before and train to and back from Fordham. Any help ideas from any one?
IMHO, Roberto’s on Arthur Avenue is one of the best italian restaurants in NYC. It is often rated at or near the top. The owner has another place a block away called Zero Otto Nove that is a combination of a cheaper version of Roberto’s and a high end pizza restaurant - also excellent. I highly recommend both restaurants.
The problem is, since we live here, we are never in the position of looking for lodging here.
I pass some motels in the Bronx on the highway, but I suspect they may have hourly rates.
There are some chain motels in Yonkers. Mostly to the west IIRC, but at least across the bridge.
I’ve actually stayed at the New Roc Marriot in New Rochelle, and it was fine (but not cheap). That would be an easy drive to Fordham, since it’s on the east side like Fordham is. You might even be able to get there by train from there. The train station is not very far from the hotel.
If there is a hotel/motel in Bronxville, that might be a very nice place to launch. Nice downtown, and as long as you’re there you can take a look at Sarah Lawrence. (which, as long as we’re taking the bloom off the proverbial rose hill, is actually in Yonkers).
From those places you can take the MTA commuter train into Manhattan if desired. (New Rochelle’s MTA line also has a Fordham stop, but I don’t know how close that stop is to the actual U).
As for the Bronx, If you find there is a motel in the Riverdale section (NW), I might best trust that one (after reading up on it).
“…since it’s on the east side like Fordham is.”
timed out, actually looks like Fordham’ Us sort of in the middle. Confused myself because of that Fordham MTA stop.
@monydad, there really aren’t many good options from what I can see. Either short of the city or pretty much mid town is what I am seeing.
I also hear good things about Roberto’s and Zero Otto Nove. I don’t know of any places to stay near Fordham’s Rose Hill campus. You are right that trying to get across the GW Bridge in the morning is not fun. Hotels in Manhattan are expensive but you might find a deal on one of the websites. The Empire Hotel has tiny rooms and is overpriced and parking is probably outrageous but is literally across the street from Lincoln Center and the Fordham Lincoln Center campus so worth checking prices. The train to the Rose Hill campus leaves from Grand Central which is at 42nd and Park so 20 blocks south and 5 - 6 blocks east of the Lincoln Center campus. The Metro North stop is Fordham and I think it is right near the entrance to the campus. (We have friends whose son went to Fordham Prep and he commuted to school on Metro North.) I wonder if you could utilize the inter campus shuttle. Not to make life more complicated but maybe worth looking at Barnard/Columbia. They are on 116th Street, straight up Broadway from Lincoln Center. You could take the # 1 train from 66th to 110th.
Did you try AirBnb?
“Zero Otto Nove”
I think that’s where we ate last time, actually…
“good options”… like so many things, are in the eyes of the beholder. If it were me, I would look someplace in lower Westchester, as I indicated. And that would be “good” enough, for me. Meaning within a 15-30 minute drive to Fordham with no bridge, or per # 152 possibly even a train ride instead. Take MTA to go to/come back from Manhattan if you don’t want to drive there.
Maybe Fordham admissions has some suggestions. Or try Manhattan College admissions, find out where they stash visitors. If anyplace.
But if you stay in midtown, per #152 you can get to the Bronx campus by taking MTA from Grand Central Station. You’d definitely want to confirm that of course.

Thanks @monydad, I will check it out. The more I think about it, the more I think the easiest thing is just to stay in midtown and take the train back and forth to Fordham.
Not many good hotels on the east side of westchster that are close to Fordham. Midtown is a good choice!
New Yorkers love to argue about and give directions. Did you take the tunnel or the bridge…?
But the correct advice is take Metro North from Grand Central. Stops right at the Rose Hill campus.
Lincoln Center and Rose Hill are pretty much separate and completely different college experiences.
Definitely stroll down Arthur Avenue – right out of the movies (sorta). FF Copolla wanted to stage the scene where Michael shoots Sollozzo and Officer McCloskey in Mario’s, but Mario turned the director down.
There’s tons of cool things to do in NYC obviously. But if you want the “full Bronx” take Metro North or the subway down to Yankee Stadium. Years later my suburban kids still talk about when I took them on the subway to sit in the bleachers in the old stadium.
My parents would never have did what you have, thank you for being a good parent, had to do everything on my own.
