Help Needed

Hi everyone. I m new to this forum and wanted ur help. I m going to apply to the ivies this fall. I m going to give SAT subject tests this january and will give SAT later this year.
I just wanted to ask you that are my academics and ECs upto this point good.....
I m in class 11 in cbse board and scored 96% in my 10th boards. I m in my school football team's captain and I represented my state in Cricket. I also participated in various exams and always came within AIR 500 . I also participated in many projects and internships. I was also invited to IIT Guwahati and Delhi to present my projects.

I plan to do engineering in my college. I can get the recommendation letters easily from my teachers.
Also I can get the recommendation letter of 2 IIT allumini under which I undertook my project.

Can u all please help me tell what score would I require in the SATs to get into an ivy and are my ECs good enough??

[]Hello
[]This Fall? Do you mean Fall 2012? If so, the deadlines have passed.
[]Take. Good Luck for them
[]Oh, so you mean next fall. Fall 2013.
[]96%, didn’t you get a CGPA? Did you change schools? That is the only time when you get a percentile and CGPA.
[]State Level sports = Awesome EC. Build your application around that.
[]Various exams? Pick only the illustrious ones.
[]Many projects and internships don’t matter. Pick the one you are passionate about.
[]Choose the projects that you were invited to present at IIT Guwahati/ IITD.
[]Engineering Major? Get one recommendation from a Science/Math teacher and other from an English/Humanities teacher.
[]Instead of getting a recc. from both IIT alumni, get it only from one. The one who knows you best. The IIT name doesn’t matter as much as the fact that a ‘research mentor’ will write you a recc.
[li]No. No one can tell you.[/li][/ul]

Here is where the Indian mentality makes a person shoot themselves in the knee. Engineering at the Ivys? No. You could argue that the research opportunities are found aplenty. However, you could easily get the best engineering education at Stanford, MIT, Georgia Tech, UIUC, Caltech, UC Berkeley, UCLA, etc.

What was your half-yearly % in 11th? What SAT subject tests are you taking? Engineering usually requires Math IIC, any Science (Physics/Chem/Bio E/M). SAT scores above 2000 are good enough. Are you asking for financial aid? If yes, then you need ~2200+ if not, ~2100+ are fine.

As for your ECs, from what you do tell in your post, I see more breadth than depth. Which is more often than not, a bad thing. Unless you show deep breadth, if you know what I mean. I can postulate that you should build your application around your cricket and research projects under IIT grads.

Yes I did mean fall of 2013. Yes I got 10 CGPA in my 10th exam. I scored 91% in 11th half yearlies.
actually I was invited to IIT guwahati and delhi for the same project.
Yes, I clearly understand what you mean. The breadth in my ECs are because I loved giving competative exams . I will surely keep your words in my mind while writing my essays.
I m planning to give maths level 2, physics and chem. subject tests.

So, I wanted to ask are my ECs good enough??
If I get 2200 in my sats then is there a chance that I will get into the ivies with fin aid??

There are only four need-blind ivies: harvard, princeton, dartmouth and yale. This means that asking for aid will not affect your chances of getting in here, so you can go ahead and do so. The other ivies are not need-blind, so applying for aid will make it harder to get in…

Yes, I m quite commited to attending to any top us college. So are my ECs good enough for an ivy and what Sat score will I require?
I m quite scared for what to expect…

I may sound rude but cricket state level is not going to be very useful , focus more about ur project not cricket, influencing adcoms with a sport they have never heard of is not that easy, they may lose interest so its better not to build ur application arounnd that!

No score in SAT is good enough to guarantee acceptance. Princeton rejects around 80% of students who have 2400 - your application must be holistic.

The reco’s may help if they are exceptional, well written, insightful and not just filled with hollow praise; do note that admission officers read thousands of apps and may get annoyed with extra material. Be careful not to send anything unnecessary.

Also, consider more than just the ivies - there are tons of schools which are atleast as good, if not better when it comes to engineering. I doubt they care much for your cricket unless you make our national team (which shouldn’t be too hard seeing how they’ve been ruined lately).

I disagree. State level in itself is a pretty big achievement. They will care very much for your current achievements.

I doubt they understand the true value of a sport at a state level - most state level players in India will not be good enough for intercollegiate teams in the US for their respective sports. From that perspective, the sports component of an app will merely display your hobby/interest since an athletic recruitment is unlikely. It makes more sense to focus on other achievements on one’s app, while mentioning the state level achievement in the Activities section, but not much more unless one is at a lack of options for the Personal Essay.
