Help Needed!

Hey! So I am planning on double majoring in music performance and neuroscience or biochemistry (I know, I am ready to stay in college for an extra year). However, I’m not really sure where to apply for what. Do I apply for music (because it requires an audition) and then take up a second major or the opposite? I have relatively strong academics so should I risk not getting into a school because of my audition as opposed to academics?

Any help is appreciated- I’ve been asking people and searching the web but I can’t really get any info. Thanks!

You may want to check out the music majors forum, and this post about double degrees in particular:

You may be able to pull this off, but music programs are notoriously time intensive. Is the science interest for pre-med? If so, you don’t need the other degree, you just need to fulfill the prerequisites.

My son was in a similar situation. Having studied an instrument from the age of 5, he was conflicted between engineering, conservatory, or trying to do both. He ultimately decided that he didn’t want music to be his job. He still plays, but he stopped forma study and graduated with an engineering BS and MS.

I suggest you look deep in your heart and decide what it is that you really want to do for a career. Trying to do too much might compromise that objective.

As a Grammy Award winning musician once told my son, “Life is much more fulfilling for a brain surgeon who is a hobbyist musician than it is for the professional musician who is a hobbyist brain surgeon.” ; )

BTW, there are way more schools where this is probably possible. A lot would depend on your instrument and the school’s rules on double majoring for music majors. As a start you could look at Rochester, Rice, Case, USC and Utah.

Good luck.

I know music isn’t going to be a career for me but even thinking about not pursuing music in college makes my heart extremely heavy about giving up my passion (I know I can always keep it as a hobby and keep playing on the side). But thanks for those schools! I’ll def check those out and find others where this is possible.

Thanks!
