My biological parents were never married so my mother has to complete a Noncustodial PROFILE. But, she doesn't file tax and never had a job. Does she still have to fill it out or does she have to send a non flier form?

juju…do you live with your mother or your father?

I live with both. I did the FAFSA with my dad because he’s the head of the household.

Mainly, read the instructions and don’t overthink them. Sadly, the CSS Profile, aside from asking the question of "never married, living together"or “never married, living separately” does not cover a lot of sitiuations. Your mother should be able to do the Non-Custodial Profile with her own information, and if she has never had a job she does not file taxes, does not have an employer or an occupation (questions from the form) and it should not be too hard. Some schools, and also the IDOC process (if you have to do that) have a Non-Filer’s Statement (for parents and students).

Just in general my policy (I help students with lots of these) is to read the instructions, just answer the question they asked, and if you need to write further information you can at the end of the form,as there is a space.

Are your parents living together? If so, I’m not sure that your mom fills out the NCP form. Maybe I’m wrong, but wouldn’t she be listed with the CP form with your dad? It’s not like they have 2 sep households.

Maybe I’m confused.

*I live with both. I did the FAFSA with my dad because he’s the head of the household. *

Did you list your mom as a member of the household?

Yes. I list my mother as a member of the household so I’m confused whether I should fill out the non-custodial profile.

No…I don’t think so. Your parents are “living together” under one roof. They are a “couple”.

You listed your mom in your household…that is fine. She doesn’t work, that is fine. That’s like any other married couple where the wife stays home. No biggie.

NCP info is really for separated/divorced/never married parents who aren’t still a “couple” and aren’t living together.

if you list your mom as a NCP, that will suggest that she’s living elsewhere.

Okay…so my mother doesn’t have to fill it out? I didn’t list my mom as a NCP.

Your mom is not your NCP. You live with both of your parents. She is counted in the household.

Oh. Sorry for my lack of understanding. I just hate doing financial aid. It’s all so confusing.

So, do I have to turn in a form in place of the Noncustodial profile…like a non flier tax form or something? Or do I just…do nothing since it doesn’t apply to me?

And thanks for answering all of my questions mom2collegekids! I really appreciate your help. Without you I would be completely lost, haha.

I would call CSS about the tax issue. Does your dad list your mom on the tax return that he files? If he lists your mom on his tax return as a dependent, then that should be good enough.

this is very similar to married people where one parent works and the other is a housewife.
