Hello! I am a senior in HS currently trying to decide between CalArts BFA Acting Program and NYU’s Playwrights Horizons Theatre BFA Program. I am an actor/writer/director/cartoonist with more of a focus towards film/tv, and I hope to do sketch comedy some day. I’m hoping to get the best training possible. Any advise with the decision would be welcome and wonderful!
A couple of questions to ask yourself… do you like NY or CA better? Also, NYU would require you to take a significant number of “regular” classes (30-40%) is that something you are looking for?
My D will graduate from NYU next month- if you have specific questions about the school - feel free to ask
I agree with @toowonderful about both the location and academic side. My S is trying to decide between Calarts and a couple of schools around the country. We are from CA and he is now leaning towards staying out here as he ultimately wants to settle in LA with Film/TV/Sketch Comedy. Neither school offers a traditional university feel, but CalArts does have an actual(and beautiful) campus with a massive shopping center within walking distance. Have you been to Calarts yet?
@PumpkinEater69 my D graduated from NYU last May and spent her first 3 years there in Playwrights Horizons. When she went in as a freshman she would purely define herself as an actor so she was surprised to be placed in Playwrights but once there she loved the training so much that she chose to do not only her primary training there but also an additional year. Playwrights provides great opportunities for those interested in also writing and directing and a good amount of her classmates are now pursuing writing and directing professionally. For her senior year, she trained in Stonestreet Studios which focused on film and TV. I do not know anything about Calarts but I do know that NYU seems to offer exactly what you are looking for. Please feel free to ask me any other questions you might have.
