help on college search - psych & marching band?

Any suggestions for colleges with both a great psych program and marching band (not scatter or pep)? Son is in top 10% public HS, 4.25 W-GPA, lots of APs/H classes, drum major of 190 person state-championship band for 2 yrs, NHS, area band, psats were dismal (177) (didn't take SATs yet but preparing with Princeton Review so hopefully things will improve) Need a college with option for non-majors to participate in bands (jazz, concert). Would like to be within 9 hrs or so from NJ.

Thanks!

Here are the schools within 9 hours of NJ who have won the Sudler Trophy for excellence in marching band traditions. Major schools should all have pretty good offerings in Psych, since it’s such a prominent staple of an Arts & Sciences curriculum - you can check their online websites and catalogs for the scope of their Psych courses.:

Penn State
West Virginia U.
Ohio State
UMass
James Madison U.
Western Carolina U.

Is money an issue? Going to an out-of-state public with a marching band could be about $30k - 48k per year - for the total Cost of attendance (tuition, fees, room, board, books, etc) depending on the school.

If OOS, does that eliminate financial aid for the most part? This is my first kid (out of 4) and we are just clueless about whether we will qualify but god, I hope so.

Too bad we all hated Rutgers!

Actually, the COA at Rutgers will be > $25,000 for New Jersey residents. Western Carolina OOS should actually be somewhat lower.

Bear in mind that the listed FULL COA often includes a lot of extra living expenses such as travel, books, supplies, computer expenses, etc.

Yes, it’s true that most OOS publics don’t give the aid needed for OOS students. Most publics can’t meet the need of it’s own residents, much less OOS students.

However, some OOS publics will give big merit scholarships based on stats to OOS students.

So, if your child has high stats, some schools will reduce the cost with big merit scholarships. Some schools will also reduce even more if you play in the band (not a lot, but a bit.)

The Rutgers price above is for OOS students. For resident students it’s $26,345.

It’s a good idea for you to find out now what your EFC is: [FinAid | Calculators | Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and Financial Aid](http://www.finaid.org/calculators/finaidestimate.phtml)

Keep in mind that only low incomes qualify for free federal help. Many aid packages have loans and gaps in them. Most schools do not meet 100% of determined need. So, the EFC is often the minimum of what you’ll be expected to pay…often it’s more.
