I want to pursue a job relating to Wall Street, the stock market, and the investment area in general. I am thinking of majoring in Economics. However, I heard that unless a you were to go to a great university (Ivy League), an economics major is basically useless as you cannot get the connections you need.
I’m from NC and got into Chapel Hill. Will an economics degree from there be good enough to go far in this sector? My second option is to be an engineer, which is a lot safer of a career.
*I am still awaiting NYU and UVA, but it seems unlikely I will get into either of those schools. I also got into NC State, Wake Forest, and Elon University.
I don’t think anyone here should tell you if you should go into business or engineering, that really depends on your interests, aptitudes, etc. I do think an engineering degree will be more employable right out of college than an economics degree. Economics is a liberal arts degree, not a business degree at most schools (meaning you won’t take a business core of classes like intro. to accounting, finance, management, IT, business law etc.) – some with this major find it difficult to land a good job while others may do well… Did you apply to the business or engineering programs at the schools? If not, you may have to try to do an internal transfer which isn’t always be easy. For now, I’d wait and see where you can get in and what is affordable and then pick.
