Help on my situation

Hey! I am new to the forums, though I have been reading them for a decent amount of time, and finally decided to post my situation so maybe I may get some clouds cleared up.

I currently attend a community college in LA, Pierce to be specific.

I am majoring in Environmental Science

I currently have 29 units and I know I need at least 60 to transfer.

Current GPA : 3.8 ( Obviously I have not completed all my prerequisite classes )

Schools that I am interested in transferring to : UCB, UCLA, UCSB

Here are a couple of questions/problems I have that I would love to have answered.

Here are a couple of questions -

What GPA do you guys think I will need to attain for these schools respectively?

I read somewhere that once you go past 70 units you are considered a senior or something, and they will not allow you to transfer...now if this is true, I will not be able to complete all my prerequisite classes before transferring to a UC, but as it says in the guide, completing all prerequisite classes is a must before transferring, it is a huge dilemma I have.

Also, I do not really plan on doing Extra Curricular Activities, but I do plan to get a job, how much does that really affect my chances of getting in to one of those 3 colleges listed above?

Thank you

I believe that the gpa you have now is good enough to get you into those three schools for your major, so try and keep it around the 3.7-4.0 area. Also it would be 90 JC units that would make you a Senior at all the UCs. 70 is generally the limit because thats when you are past being a first quarter junior. People with 70-80 can still transfer, but its better to have 60-70 units. You dont have to complete all your prereqs but you shouldn't have any less then 2-3 missing prereqs especially for LA and Berkeley. The whole extra curricular thing will not affect your chances in regards to getting in the schools. When you fill out your UC apps you will have an opportunity to explain your situation. You sound like an excellent candidate so far, keep up the good work!

You could have 1,000 units and still be accepted.....AS LONG AS all the all the units are from a community college.

After you get accepted, the maximum number of community college units you can apply to your degree is 70 (or 105 semester). Anything over 70 gets deducted after you transfer.

I have 90+ CC units and was told by a Berkeley counselor that this is no problem. I will tranfer in with 70 units applied to my degree, making me a junior.

also, another question I have is, how important is completing IGETC, because it seems like if I can only transfer with 2-3 prereqs missing, then I won't be transferring for 2 years, and I was hoping to get out of here earlier than that...

Also, I am terribly sorry for the double post, but I can not seem to find the edit button, to edit my second post. Anyways, thank you for the answers but I am still a little confused, now should I take all my prereqs even if I go past 70 units? Or should I take as many as I can in 70 units and then apply?

IGETC is VERY important. You definitely want to complete it before you transfer.

And don't worry about going over 70 units (as long as you stay at a community college). Like I said, you can have THOUSANDS of community college units - you still only transfer in with 70 units, making you a junior transfer.

They do NOT care if you go over 70 community college units. They DO care if you have completed IGETC and major prep courses.

If it takes you 70+ units to complete IGETC and get your major prep done, then by all means, you should go over 70 units. You will be a much more competitive applicant with 70+ community college units and IGETC and major prep completed.
