The first passage of the Reading Section in Practice Test #3 was giving me a lot of issues. On top of all that, Collegeboard’s answer explanations were very ineffective. I need a discussion for questions 1,3, 4, 5, 7, 9. It’s a lot but I just don’t get it. Here’s the link: https://collegereadiness.collegeboard.org/pdf/sat-practice-test-3-answers.pdf
- Use the process of elimination. There is nothing in the passage pertaining to a thorough evaluation of the employer (A) or revenge (C), and while Lady Carlotta does cast some judgment upon Mrs. Quabarl, there is nothing to suggest that she abjectly dislikes the woman (D). Supporting choice B are lines 31-35.
- Lines 9-12 clearly detail how Lady Carlotta is known to her friends as disregarding social norms by being outspoken. She is certainly not viewed as tactful (B); lines 9-12 directly contradict this choice. While she is portrayed as frank, there's nothing to suggest that she's unfriendly or ambitious.
- See above.
- By referencing Lady Carlotta's infrequent implementation of the "doctrine of non-interference," the author is playfully referencing the woman's propensity toward outspokenness. She is not portrayed as being deceptive (A), is not being cruel in her practice (B), and this story does not indicate a change in behavior (D).
- Quite honestly, this appears to be a poorly phrased answer. I suppose you could reach this conclusion through the process of elimination, but I do disagree with CollegeBoard's answer choices. Nonetheless, they are prompting you to look at lines 50-53.
- Lines 67-71: "She was one of those imperfectly self-assured individuals who are magnificent and autocratic so long as they are not seriously opposed." This perfectly aligns with answer choice B, that she presents herself as a force with which to reckon, but it actually easily suppressed by minor opposition. For questions such as these, look at the following question (which gives specific line choices); the two answers will need to align.
