Help on raising ACT Science

Hi. I'm an international student that is majorly screwed in ACT Science.

For the September ACT, I got the following scores:

27- English

28- Math

31- Reading (O_o Wasn't Reading pretty hard?)

26- Science

Composite- 28

I seem to never have enough time to solve all of the Science questions. On this test, I practically left out 4-5 questions. I realize the time can be considerably reduced by practice, but the scores aren't rising the way I want it to be when I see the scores of the practice tests I've been taking. What I'm hoping to achieve is a 30-31 score for the Science.

So.
To all of the high scoring Students out there for Science, WHAT IS YOUR WAY OF STUDYING FOR SCIENCE? Also, does anyone know if there is a workbook out there that focuses only on Science?

Thanks a lot and best wishes on whatever you're hoping to achieve.

All the Best

Thanks a lot for the help I appreciate the help

I just read the intro quickly and then go straight to the questions for science. btw do u have any tips for reading?

I normally skim though the text and read them as needed. What do you normally do? I would suggest taking two tests, one where you skim through and one where you read it to see which one suits you better

@ACTmathdoctor thanks so much your post was a great help. I guess I’ll go and buy some of these books.

@just4notherguy First of all, for the Reading section, being able to interpret and match corresponding words to the answer choices is important. Thankfully, on the ACT, the answer choices are practically word-for-word to the information in the passage, so it’s comparatively easier to solve than the SAT CR problems. If you practice this then you can see a significant increase in your ACT Reading score.

One way to quicken your Solving Speed, is to first look at the first paragraph and last paragraph for an idea of what the passage. Then go strait to the vocab questions and solve them (It doesn’t require much reading). After, that solve the questions that refer to only one paragraph, not the passage as a whole. This reduces the need to read the entire passage and also allows you to have an idea of what the passage is about (in addition to the first and last passages you read first).

Practically, that’s what I do when I solve the questions. I normally get 34-35 (never got a 36 for some reason) on practice tests.

Hey guys to further clarify my problem with the science:

For the bio part (natural science) of the science section, I have absolutely no trouble in solving them in time. However, for some reason, I can’t effectively solve the chem. and physics section. Sometimes, the data doesn’t match with whatever I am solving or I just don’t understand the answer choices. I get frustrated when I solve them and lose too much time in solving these questions.

First of all, let’s be clear. There are 7 passages or sections in the Science portion, and you have 35 min. to do all them. That’s an average of 5 min. per section, even though some may be smaller/larger than others.

ACT knows this and doesn’t expect you to read through those long passages and then do the questions, all in 5 min. Anyone would struggle with that.

The key is to jump straight to the questions (ON CERTAIN PARTS) or just skim the test, for certain parts like when there’s data, graphs and long passages.

But for some of the parts, where they take the viewpoints of scientists and there is no data or graphs, that’s where you must take the time to read (and quickly too) and then do the questions. I’m no whiz (I got a 28 on my science the last time I took it) but this is my strategy. Please share all of yours and good luck! :)

Thanks everyone~! I took the ACT and I found the tips provided very helpful. I think I got a better score than before and it would be safe to say that some credit goes to you guys who answered my post. I think I’m satisfied with my test today and I am sure that I got a good score. Thanks again and good luck on the academic goals you want guys want to achieve :)

I improved from a 26 to a 31 on science, but I’m not sure how… just practice I guess and not trying to read through everything.
