Help on SAT writing section??

I am going to be a sophomore, and I did decently on my SAT for a freshman (700 M 670CR 600W) but that only comes out to 1970. I'm hoping to get up in the 2250 range. I feel confident that I can improve both my math and CR scores, but the W is the one I would like to be the kicker for me. Any advice on how to prepare or write the essay on the SAT? I would love to get a 750 or above. (BTW I knew my essay was horrible while I was writing it. I had a tricky topic IMO. I feel like if I took it today I could get at least a 650W)

I always use two examples in my essays—one literature example, one historical example. The literature one should always be concise and accurate above all else, because the SAT essay graders are high-school teachers, so any books that you’ve read in high school would be okay. You’re still going to go through a lot of books because you’re going to be a sophomore. ^^ But always remember to relate your examples back to what your stance is (“This is a perfect example of ___, etc.”).

For the historical example, examples that you learn in World History or US History are especially useful. Quote people like Gandhi, Martin Luther King Jr., etc. and don’t talk about issues that could be controversial (i.e. Hitler or something). I’ve always gotten 12s on my essays, and I’m pretty sure it’s because I also wrote until the very last line of the given pages. hahah.

Good luck! Your score is loads better than mine was as a freshman… T_T You’re going to go really far!

Thanks for all the advice! And just out of curiosity, what SAT score did you end up with after junior year? I have been wondering just how much my score will improve.

To me, I think that Writing is the easiest section to improve. I started with a 400 and got a 690 in June, and I’m aiming for 700+ now. I’m weaker at essay because I’m not a native English speaker. However, here’s some tips that I recently learn to boost the essay score.

Avoid I, we, me, ourselves in the essay.

Try using big words. Eg. “paradigm” for “example”.

Prepare your own template.

Have an example bank.

I’m trying these tips and hope to score higher on writing in October. Good luck anyways. And please tell me how you improve your reading so easily btw. ;)
